All five components of the Index deteriorated, driving down both current and future confidence: 🌡️The #PresentSituation Index fell 9.9 pts to 113.7. 🔮The #ExpectationsIndex fell 9.5 points to 65.1, well below the threshold of 80 that usually signals a recession ahead.

The Conference Board #ConsumerConfidence Index fell 9.7 points in January, to 84.5 (1985=100), from an upwardly revised 94.2 in December. Following this month's plunge, #confidence now stands at its lowest point since 2014, surpassing the depths of the COVID-19 pandemic.

🔻On net, consumers’ views of their Family’s Current Financial Situation collapsed into negative territory for the first time in nearly four years. 🚀 By contrast, expectations for their Family’s Future Financial Situation were the most positive since January of this year.

The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index® fell 3.8 points in December to 89.1 (1985=100), from 92.9 last month. November’s reading was upwardly revised, as responses collected after the end of the government #shutdown were more positive than those during the impasse.

All components of the #ExpectationsIndex deteriorated in November, with consumers turning notably more pessimistic about business conditions six months from now. #Expectations have tracked below 80 for ten consecutive months, the threshold which often signals #recession ahead.

The Conference Board #ConsumerConfidence Index declined by 6.8 points in November to 88.7 (1985=100), down from 95.5 in October. After moving sideways for several months, overall confidence fell to its lowest level since April, fueled in part by the government shutdown.
