@Deadliftgrl I am doing really well! How are you? Is everything healing well? Shawn and I are going on a Peaker walk in June and attending the Outlander concert in Indianapolis in November. We are going to be spreading sparkles wherever we go!

A year ago I wrote about breaking my neck during a gym accident. About my journey and challenges. About losing my dog Guava in the midst of it but how caring for her was a healing gift. Well as 2025 comes to a close I’m thrilled to report that it was a great post-recovery year in the gym! Slow and steady won the race this year. I made it back, better than before🥹 For reference, my bench press PR before my injury was 145lbs (66kg). Thanks to all of you sparkly cheerleaders. I always felt your care and support. And it has made all the difference.

It has been almost six (6) months since the Outlander season 7 finale episode aired. It has been ten (10) months since Sam and Cait posted that they had filmed their final scenes (not discounting ADR completed at a later point) I know by #Droughtlander standards that six (6) months is a walk in the park, but, I just want to know when it is coming. I wish we could get a release date for the final season of Outlander. I know that many of you are excited about BoMB and you are looking forward to watching that series unfold. That it will, on some level, tide you over whilst waiting for the final season of Outlander. I love that for you. I know that many of you are glad that Season 8 is delayed because you want to hold onto this final season for as long as possible. If that works for you, great. I am happy for you. But. Me? I want to see the final season. I want to see Jamie repair his relationship with Lord John. I want to see Jamie and William create and nurture their relationship as father and son. I want to see all of Jamie and Claire's family together, safe. I want to know how they have concluded the story that they have told. I want to have their ending delivered with a bright red bow so that we can eagerly unwrap it. I want to conclude my own personal journey that has been watching the Outlander TV adaptation. I want to see Sam's Jamie Fraser on my screen for one last time. I want to celebrate his truly remarkable portrayal of our favourite "man in a kilt." I want to watch the ending, turn off the TV, and smile. Surely that isn't too much to ask for? After all, aren't we "the best fans ever?"

To my Sparkle Lounge friends…This is a long read but I hope you’ll bear with me. Today was a very important day for me. And I wanted to share it with you. To celebrate with you. You see, earlier this year I broke my neck. A portion of my C7 vertebra was sheared off during a lift by the stress of my trapezius or rhomboid muscle pulling across it. Sadly, this will never fully heal. And surgery cannot correct it. What exists now is cartilage between two jagged bone pieces that will never fuse together. Forevermore, I will have separated pieces of cervical spine bones where there once was one. I wore a cervical collar for a few months and spent my days largely at rest. I slept upright. I was treated by a spine specialist in the Neurology Dept of Stanford Hospital. Yes, it was all very painful. And there were days when I wasn’t sure what my future held. A spinal fracture is no small thing. And this was my second one. At age 23, I fractured a part of my lumbar region in a car accident. And middle age does not confer the same forgiveness on your body as youth does. After four months, I was able to start physical therapy with a PT who specializes in the recovery of professional athletes (like SF Giants’ Buster Posey). My program was robust and aggressive. Daily. A few tears from pain and frustration were shed. A few expletives spewed. But I was determined to get back to the gym. No matter what that return looked like. And throughout it all, I was comforted by the gift of caring for my dying dog, Guava. She gave me a reason to look outwards, to focus on loving and caring for another creature. I worked hard to give her a good ending. And lest you think I’m nuts for wanting to get back to the gym, you need to understand that the very best way women can protect their aging bones is to lift and do resistance training. I did have a bone scan when this happened and I’m happy to report that due to nine years of lifting, my bones show no degeneration as compared to 20 years ago. Osteoporosis played no part in this injury. So back to why today is so important…today after exactly eight months, I went back to my gym to resume sessions with my trainer. My lifting calluses, so hard earned, are gone now and where once I ruled a rack, I now stand damaged and diminished. But, I made it back. And I’m so happy. And really very proud. Throughout this whole ordeal, my dear and magical friend Tash has been walking beside me. Lifting me up when I needed. Always making me laugh. Always holding a space for me. Always understanding that this injury fractured my soul as well as my neck. I am grateful to her for guarding my weaker side. And so it was that today, I made it back to my gym. Deadliftgrl is back from the lifting dead. Yes, I’m going to take it slowly. I’m starting over. Just days before this injury I had racked up huge numbers and reached an elite status for an amateur lifter. I was about to enter my first competition. Well now, I must compete with what I was in order to be whatever I will be. You all have no idea how you’ve helped me through this challenging time. I don’t do well with sympathy or pity and certainly not self-pity; I hope you’ll all understand that what I needed most from you here over the past few months is exactly what you gave me: joy and laughter. The bawdy and the beautiful. A bit of naughty, a bit of nice. And a full dance card in that digital conga line known as The Sparkle Lounge. As for right now, I just ask one thing: Wish me luck as I rebuild, will you?

“Are you asking what it is like to grow old … as Jamie?” Heughan jokes. “It’s wonderful to find that maturity in him. He knows why he is here, which is the joy of aging.” What a great little article: reviewjournal.com/livewell/scott…

@smashingteacups I got to read the chapter today, and the two before it together the flow correct. It was all I expected and more! In just a few sentences I was transported there. Such a great story!

Today at PT, I did 3 minutes of bench presses at 37lbs. Watch out @Deadliftgrl, I'm almost at your level. 🤣 Seriously, it felt great, and the therapists are pleased with my progress, 5 weeks post-op. I'm up to .31 of a mile walking everyday. Slowly and steady wins the race.

The view from my back deck very early this morning. The air was very dense and heavy so they just hung there. Boring for the passengers but great for photos. This was part of the Balloons Over Rte 66 fest in my town this weekend.
