Screw it. I'm saying it. George Martin isn't a good author. I said it. He took the fantasy genre opened up by Lord Of The Rings, decided to kill off almost every character written, and sold it by adding a shitload of sex. Sex doesn't a good story make. Is it decently written? Yes. It's a professional job. However, the story is pretty shit. There's no POINT. Death and titties, and that's it. Now, maybe it's just because I'm weird, but a story should have a point. Something you get from it. Death can't be random, it needs a purpose. The story is what? Any point? Any lessons learned? Character growth that ISN'T just learning how to sleep with/murder people better? If you pulled out the sex, it wouldn't sell, and if that's the case, a book doesn't DESERVE to sell. I will stand by this opinion to the death. George Martin is a crap author because he can't produce a meaningful story, and he's just an uninspired hack who saw dollar signs and doesn't actually care about producing any piece of art.
