There’s been a glitch in our trust computers since an IT update so we can’t use an internet browser for non-intranet websites. Today I had to fill out a ReferAPatient *and* type out an entire whole spine MRI report on my phone. If you know, you know…

11-15 April will be the next round of Junior Doctors strike action in England.   The Government is still refusing to make a credible offer - or any offer at all - to resolve our dispute. Read more: bma.org.uk/juniorspay

@AbbieTutt In some countries it is 10 10 week rotations too. Just depends what the goal of the number of jobs is. Is longer in one place better or more exposure to different departments and hospitals?

If the UKFPO programme is just about learning how to be a doctor then what is wrong with four 6 month rotations instead of 6 four month rotations. The majority of us aren’t going into the jobs we get as rotations so what harm does it do to allow two extra months 🫠

@zackferguson @drcolinm In Aus it’s 5 jobs in internship year (~10weeks each) compulsory med, surg and ED, then often 5 jobs in 2nd year with much more choice over the terms (eg someone surgically inclined could do ICU, Ortho, neurosurg, acute med, urology). Agree it’s short in each one!

@drcolinm None of the specialty you’ve mentioned are currently compulsory in the FP? Ensuring every specialty is represented would result in very short placements. I just feel longer placements would allow immersion and integration within a team. This is the approach I would take.

If I had complete control: FY1: 6mo Surgery, 6mo Medicine FY2: 4mo ED, 4mo GP, 4mo a (guaranteed) supernumerary specialty of your choice Max 2 different hospitals. Abolish almost all ePortfolio requirements. Substitute teaching for weekly small group case debriefing.

@RobbieUriarte @sk_d97 Curious how you’re getting that number? 37.5 x 14.13 x 52 = £27,550 but I suppose that would be an England based FY1, I’m not sure what the other nation’s hourly rate works out to

If an FY1 junior doctor worked a regular 9-5 Mon-Fri 37.5 hour rota, they’d make £22,956 a year. The Civil service grad scheme pays £27,000 and accepts applicants with a 2:2 in any discipline. Tell me junior doctors aren’t getting ripped off…

@Not4Twos FY1 pay for 12 hour bank shifts would be £240 before tax in London 🥲

Granted, a fair few of these are the same people trying to get hold of me multiple times for the same thing, and two of them were MET calls. But it doesn’t feel very sustainable!

My bleep went off 112 times in 12 hours today. That’s once every 6mins 30s. As weekend ward cover FY1 in a mid-size inner city DGH, how does this compare to other FY1’s experience? #MedTwitter

@OrthopodReg But Simon didn’t you hear him? Everything is everyone else’s fault all of the time, just like the fall of the Roman Empire… 🤦‍♂️

To any F1 who has had the worst day ever as weekend ward cover. You got through it. It does get better. Even tomorrow will seem better. Trust me. That Saturday, eight years ago is still probably my worst ever shift.
