I just realized that I have never been this old before.

Emails. Follow-ups. Timing. The read is the easy part. Being remembered is the work.

There are projects you work hard to get. And there are projects that come from staying in touch. Not everything in this business happens in the booth.

Voice-over has more in common with editing than acting. Most of the work is knowing what to leave out.

3 things that have mattered more than anything in my VO career: 1) Showing up prepared 2) Being easy to work with 3) Knowing when to stop None of them are about having “a great voice.”

Had a session today where we tried 3 completely different reads. They ended up going back to the first one. Happens more than you’d think. Sometimes the instinct you have right out of the gate is the right one.

VO Rule #884 Most direction isn’t about changing your voice. It’s about changing your point of view. A small shift in how you see the line usually changes everything.

One comment I’ve heard many times over the years: “I grew up with your voice” That’s part of the strange charm of voice-over. Your voice can travel pretty far without your face ever going with it. That’s always a nice thing to hear. This is a wonderfully strange biz. I love it.

Ran across this spot I voiced for Hub City Ford a few years ago. In this one I’m doing the main voice-over… and also the weatherman you hear in the commercial. Sometimes the job is straight narration. Sometimes you get to sneak a character in too.

There’s a moment in most sessions where everything clicks. The read settles in. The room relaxes. You know you’ve got it. Those moments are still my favorite part of the work.
