Spectacle of the Speaker Squeaker got you down? It could be worse. Under British rule, in several colonies, the Royal Governor could veto the choice of Speaker. For example, in 1766, MA Governor Bernard vetoed the elected Speaker of the (state) House James Otis. So, when writing in the Constitution that "The House of Representatives shall chuse their Speaker..." the founders were probably more focused on the "House gets to pick and nobody gets to veto" part than the "who can be Speaker" part. But can you imagine if they had kept the tradition and Biden had a veto? Or if Trump had had a veto when Pelosi was elected Speaker? This is going in my gratitude journal....(I'll take what I can get).
