🚨 As Ohio’s abortion laws tighten, most women still don’t know what their options really are. Only 42% of women aged 18–44 were aware of self-managed medication abortion—and misinformation is widespread. 30% of women think Plan B (emergency contraception) is a method of self-managed abortion, and awareness is lowest among those already facing the greatest barriers to care. This research by Katlynn McFarland, Maria F. Gallo (@mf_gallo), Mikaela H. Smith, Abigail Norris Turner, and Danielle Besett (@DanielleBessett) shows stark gaps in awareness after Dobbs, with Black, Asian, and less-educated women significantly less likely to know about self-managed medication abortion. 📉 Understanding how gaps in SMMA awareness shape pregnancy outcomes in restricted states is critical—and demands further research. 💊What motivates men to try hormonal birth control? 📊 This study provides valuable insights into why men choose to use novel hormonal contraceptives—based on interviews with 30 diverse clinical trial participants. ✔️ Men cited motivations like sharing contraceptive responsibility, enhancing intimacy, protecting bodily autonomy, and even concerns about overpopulation and global well-being. ✔️ Some also valued the ability to prevent pregnancy discreetly. Willingness to use these methods often varied by relationship status. 📉 As reproductive landscapes shift post-Dobbs, continued research is essential to understand men’s evolving roles—and to support growing interest in male-controlled birth control. #contraception #malecontraception #reproductivehealth 🔗: contraceptionjournal.org/article/S0010-…

🚨 What are Pharmacy deserts and how do they impact Contraception Access? 👉 Community pharmacies play a key role in providing hormonal contraceptives, emergency contraception, and counseling. When local pharmacies close, it puts reproductive healthcare at risk. As pharmacy closures increase across the U.S., access to essential contraceptive care is shrinking—especially in underserved areas. Learn more about it here: contraceptionjournal.org/article/S0010-…

Who’s getting left behind when it comes to birth control access in high school? 📊 This study reveals major racial and sex disparities in teen contraceptive use. 👉 National data show that while contraceptive use is generally low among high school students, it’s especially low among Black, Hispanic, and Asian girls—with significant gaps in access to or use of reliable methods like the pill or long-acting reversible contraception (LARC). 🔑 Key findings: ✔️ Only 23% of Asian and Hispanic girls, and 21% of Black girls, used reliable contraception at last sex—compared to nearly 46% of White girls. ✔️ 37% of Asian female students used no reliable method at all. ✔️ Use of both condoms and another method was especially rare among students of color. ⚠️ These disparities point to deep-rooted barriers—including access, stigma, and lack of culturally relevant sex ed—and underscore the urgent need for inclusive, community-driven reproductive health programs in schools. 🔗: contraceptionjournal.org/article/S0010-… #contraception #adolescents #reproductivehealth #racialethnicdisparities

📊 Our new shows that denying abortion access to pregnant people with chronic kidney disease (CKD) leads to worse health outcomes and major cost increases. 👉 Without in-state access, cases of preeclampsia, preterm birth, kidney failure, and death rise significantly. Healthcare costs increase by over $533 million annually, and quality of life declines. ✔️ Providing access prevents serious complications and is a cost-effective, life-saving strategy for people with chronic illness. ⚠️ Abortion access is essential medical care. 🔗: contraceptionjournal.org/article/S0010-…

Can birth control do more than prevent pregnancy? 💊 This article shows that estetrol/drospirenone, a combined oral contraceptive, can also reduce both physical and emotional menstrual symptoms. In a large Phase 3 trial across the US and Canada, first-time pill users saw significant improvements in: ✔️ Menstrual pain ✔️ Premenstrual & menstrual water retention ✔️ Premenstrual negative mood symptoms Switchers from other pills saw stable symptoms—suggesting added benefits for new users. ➡️ Read it on: contraceptionjournal.org/article/S0010-…

Could male birth control be as simple as an injection? 💉 This article shows how ADAM, an injectable hydrogel, could offer a safe, effective, and reversible option for vas-occlusion—without surgery. 🧪 Preclinical results: • Blocks sperm, allows small molecules • Sets in 30 secs, resists pressure • Safe & biocompatible in 2-year animal study With no adverse effects and minimal tissue reaction, ADAM is a promising step toward nonpermanent male contraception—a much-needed addition to the reproductive health toolbox. #MaleContraception #Contraception #ReproductiveHealth 🔗: contraceptionjournal.org/article/S0010-…

Where do people who use birth control get it, and does insurance matter? This study of 26 states found most obtain contraception from private providers. However, those with public or no insurance often turn to community health centers and family planning clinics, which play a crucial role in providing access for those with limited resources. Expanding provider options is key to equitable access. 🔗: contraceptionjournal.org/article/S0010-… #contraception #reproductivehealth #birthcontrol #healthinsurance

Does policy change equal better access?💡 Six years after Pennsylvania Medicaid expanded IPLARC reimbursement, fewer than half of hospitals offer postpartum IUDs or implants—especially in rural areas. More support is needed for equitable access. 🔗: #fig0005" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">contraceptionjournal.org/article/S0010-…

Can the Thigh Be a Safe Alternative for Etonorgestrel Implant Insertion? The etonorgestrel implant is typically placed in the upper arm, but for patients with arteriovenous fistulas undergoing hemodialysis, this may not be feasible. This case report describes a successful thigh insertion, highlighting the need for alternative sites in select patients. Expanding insertion options could improve contraceptive access for those with medical contraindications to arm placement. Further documentation and research are essential to guide clinical decision-making. 🔗: contraceptionjournal.org/article/S0010-…

Can Implanon NXT cause Symptomatic Hypotension? Implanon NXT is a widely used long-acting contraceptive implant known for its high efficacy and minimal maintenance. While generally well tolerated, this case report highlights a rare adverse reaction—episodic symptomatic hypotension following insertion, with symptoms resolving after removal. This finding raises awareness of hypotension as a potential side effect, emphasizing the need for early recognition and intervention to improve patient outcomes. Further research is needed to understand the mechanism behind this reaction and its implications for contraceptive counseling. 🔗: contraceptionjournal.org/article/S0010-…

Why do case reports matter?👩‍⚕️📖 Simply put, case reports are like medical detective stories—they document real patient experiences, highlighting rare cases, unexpected outcomes, and new treatment approaches. Unlike big research studies, they give us quick, valuable insights that can spark innovation and improve care. In this thread, we feature four unique cases. Each one expands our understanding and challenges conventional approaches in reproductive health care. #healthcare #reproductivehealth #contraception

💡New research on estetrol/drospirenone offers insight into its cardiovascular safety for users with risk factors. In a study of over 1,400 participants with conditions like high blood pressure or elevated BMI, only 0.2% discontinued due to hypertension—all of whom already had high-normal blood pressure and additional risk factors. The findings suggest that estetrol/drospirenone may be a well-tolerated contraceptive option for those with certain cardiovascular risks, though more research is needed. 🔗: contraceptionjournal.org/article/S0010-…
