FIRE GUTS GLENVIEW AREA 8 MARKET Harare, 17 May 2026 – A devastating fire gutted the Glenview Area 8 Furniture Market in the early hours today, destroying 483 stalls and leaving over 2,000 traders counting heavy losses. The blaze, which broke out around 1 AM, consumed furniture, raw materials, and equipment worth an estimated US$15 million. Fire brigades contained the fire, but structures could not be salvaged due to the intensity. Authorities are investigating possible arson or an electrical fault. The Civil Protection Unit, working with Government departments including Small and Medium Enterprises, is assessing the damage. Officials said the scale may warrant declaring the incident a national disaster, as the entire market will require extensive rebuilding.

How Dairibord performed in the first quarter of 2026: · Sales volumes grew 26% · The company commissioned a new Steri plant in Chipinge, which has supported a 15% jump in liquid milks · New investments in Cascade and Pfuko Maheu contributed to a 29% growth in the beverages unit. Beverages are the biggest part of Dairibord’s business, accounting for 67% of the product mix · Foods grew 31%, driven mostly by yoghurt. However, production costs are rising as utilities struggle: “Ongoing electricity shortages necessitated increased reliance on alternative energy sources, while certain production sites incurred additional costs from purchased water.”

𝗧𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗯𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵 over the past month, with consumers feeling the pinch at major markets like Mbare Musika. Currently, 𝗨𝗦$𝟭 𝗯𝘂𝘆𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝟭𝟬–𝟭𝟮 𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘂𝗺 𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗲𝘀, a sharp drop from the usual 20–22 found during glut periods. Prices in upmarket areas are often double this. Key reasons include: * 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁: Farmers are currently prioritising the 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 and maize harvesting over horticulture. * 𝗥𝗲𝗼𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝗧𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗲𝘀: With nearly 400 million kg expected this year, labour and transport are diverted away from perishables. * 𝗜𝗻𝗽𝘂𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀: High fertiliser and fuel expenses keep floor prices elevated for growers. While this cycle is seasonal, the impact on your grocery budget is immediate. 🍅 Are you seeing better deals at your local market?
