@bphillipsonMP If you were in charge of British Olympic Cycling team you would give them Raleigh Grifters like the working class have. If kids get a better education and create wealth then surely thats good, but you dont see it that way.

Kemi lost her head at PMQs - and afterwards too. It's not the first time. She's compared me to a Gestapo officer. I wonder what it is about a working class woman driving record investment in state schools by ending private schools' tax breaks that the Tories hate so much.
Bridget Phillipson@bphillipsonMP

The Gestapo marched hundreds of thousands of innocent people to their deaths. I've ended private schools' tax breaks to invest in state schools. No responsible leader makes vile comparisons like this. Kemi Badenoch is not fit to be Prime Minister.

I think the issues now is when, and not if, we reach “Crossover”. The point where Reform are no longer ahead in the polls. And what the internal and external reaction will be.

Andy Burnham was elected by only 0.03% of the British public. He wasn’t elected under the current Labour manifesto. He has been an MP for only a few hours in this parliament. He would have weakest mandate of ANY potential prime minister in modern history.

@christiancalgie He's connectable... nobody could connect with someone so fake as Starmer.. a jellyfish collapsing to everyone else... but a fierce tyrant towards the native population.. Burnham deserves a chance.. Can he handle the pressure 🤷

This is right. But don’t sink billions more into the same failed private contractors. Build the state capacity to deliver it ourselves. Enough of socialising the costs and privatising the profits. We pay for it. We benefit.

INSANE! Lib Dem-led Oxfordshire Council have WON their High Court injunction to BAN people putting flags in the street. Anyone who puts up flags could face up to 2 YEARS in *prison* or an unlimited fine. The Britain-hating Lib Dems should be ashamed of themselves. DISGRACEFUL!

@DPJHodges Thought it was clear, its a legal gift, no tax required, there are no conditions, he can spend it on what he likes. With all his combined wealth he is paying for security. He could buy beer and cars, its not all ring fenced. I would invest it not let it deflate

NEW: Am told "dozens" of Labour MPs are now pushing for a Darren Jones leadership bid, including some ministers. The number of MPs contacting him to urge him to run has continued to rise after Starmer's resignation speech this morning. The case from Jones allies is that Burnham should not be allowed to take over without a contest or mandate. They also say that he is relatively untested. The hope is that a critical mass of MPs who are uncomfortable with Burnham will get Jones on the ballot and force a contest. The risk, obviously, is that these MPs are split between Jones and another contender, which could be Al Carns. Latest: telegraph.co.uk/politics/2026/…

NEW: I'm told that Andy Burnham has now held talks with Keir Starmer (as per @oliver_wright) for the first time since before the Makerfield by-election. No 10 sources confirm the PM and his likely successor had an hour-long "off site" meeting earlier today. Downing Street has said Burnham can start receiving government briefings from the civil service "as soon as possible" to help with transition of power. Starmer has agreed the new Labour MP can meet with Antonia Romeo, the cabinet secretary, to discuss plans.

The Trump administration is in quite the rush to stuff dosh into the mouths of Iran’s IRGC — with very little to show for it. Now being reported that agreement has been reached with the US to release $12 billion in frozen Iranian funds. The US has already announced easing of sanctions to allow the sale of Iranian oil and petrochemicals until at least August 1st

Squirming Farage knows this is now a scandal that could end his chances of being PM. Everyone, including his own supporters, knows his failure to declare a secret £5m bung from a Thailand-based crypto tycoon absolutely STINKS.

One thing on the Ed to Chancellor debate. One narrative that hasn't developed yet, but will in the coming days, is how Labour have one again gone for a male leader. I think Andy Burnham will want to ensure most of, if not all, of the major offices of state are filled by women.

BTW, Keir Starmer is perfectly entitled to want to kneecap Andy Burnham. If I was in his position, I'd feel exactly the same. But I'm just pointing out all that "in the national interest" talk is rubbish.

The first conflict of the transition period: Sir Keir Starmer is planning to push ahead with announcing the Defence Investment Plan despite Andy Burnham wanting it delayed until he is in office The prime minister is preparing to announce the increase in defence spending - which has already led to huge government splits and the resignation of John Healey as defence secretary - as part of his legacy But Burnham's allies believe the decision should be his as it is he - and whoever his defence secretary is - that will have to live with the consequences....

Cabinet Office minister Nick Thomas-Symonds backed Andy Burnham for the Labour leadership and suggested a contest to replace Sir Keir Starmer would not be in the national interest. “I am backing Andy Burnham to succeed Keir. I think, first of all, we have a job of delivery to do in the second half of the Parliament. I think he has shown, Andy, comprehensively as the mayor of Greater Manchester, that he can carry out that job of delivery. “But secondly, there is the question about leading us into the next general election and defeating Reform and I think Andy Burnham has just shown comprehensively in Makerfield that he can do that, we’ve seen him do it in an election. “So I’m backing Andy Burnham and, yes, looking for a swift transition.” Asked if that meant he wanted to avoid a contest, he said: “I just think we have to weigh up what is in the best interests of the country. I am of the view that it needs to be a swift transition, but of course I understand colleagues have difficult decisions to make.”
