Walked down my local High St today and there was no Woolworths, C&A, Blockbusters, BHS, Comet or Wilkinson’s. Instead there was 10 Turkish barbers, 15 Somalian Vape shops and a few Phone shops with foreign types running them. My grandmother didn’t die in the Falklands War for this. Starmer has a lot to answer for.

@DanNeidle Is it possible the real figure is higher than this because of the use of trusts and other structures that result in the under-reporting of wealth? I believe this is a way wealthy people do in fact limit/avoid taxes. Does the "tax gap" figure under-report the under-reporting?

It’s also deeply innumerate. The UK’s richest 1% own about £3 trillion. How could they possible owe 17% of all their assets in tax?

Amazing the nonsense people post about tax. Just for engagement? Or because it’s comforting and means we don’t need to make any difficult decisions?

🏡 Housing co-ops work. The problem is that UK law doesn't have a home for them. Without a proper co-operative housing tenure, co-ops have to work to legal structures built for something else, making them harder to set up, harder to scale, and harder to access.

On the 7th of May, over 1,100 Co-operative candidates will stand across the UK, contesting more than 1 in 5 seats up for election, in over 120 councils. Vote Labour and Co-operative on 7 May.

@ElectionMapsUK This underlines how our electoral system isn't fit for purpose in a multi-party system. Many of those who complained that Labour won a large majority last year with a fairly low vote share would be happy to see Reform gain a majority with 28% - but that would be a travesty.

I was a citizen of the EU for most of my adult life, and it gave me the right to live, work, travel or retire anywhere in the EU. This was taken away by Brexit which was led by those with close ties to Russia. Resist Russia and Trump and Musk. Rejoin the EU.

Britain is now a pro-EU country. The only people keeping Brexit alive are politicians who benefit from the damage.
