The reason Lum's hair is like that is because Takahashi WANTED it like that. Lum's hair is originally supposed to be holographic and constantly shifting which was not a thing they could do on the budget if an anime back in the 80s which is why they settled with aqua.

dA was dead before they did the AI slop. It died when they did that massive overhaul and started introducing the weird crystal system and screwing up the subscription options.
