Gil points it out directly: “You still lack a true reason to fight.” What he means is the same thing Richard himself explains in episode 4: he doesn’t have a wish for the Grail. And that’s a big deal. Heroic Spirits summoned to a Grail War are supposed to want the Grail; they’re supposed to have a wish. Richard doesn’t. Because of that, he lacks the core motivation that normally drives Servants to fight. The only reason he’s participating is to protect Ayaka, but that alone isn’t enough to fully anchor him. So spiritually speaking, he’s already at a disadvantage. 2. Then there’s the contract issue. When Ayaka said “No, I’m not your master,” it interrupted the formation of the Servant contract. Because of that, the link between them is incomplete. If he had a proper Master–Servant contract, he wouldn’t be dealing with those limitations. 3. And finally, Richard is clearly holding back because of Ayaka. Partially because her reluctance of calling herself a master. He’s constantly aware and worried about how much of her magical energy he’s using. Even when he uses Spamlibur, it’s only because he has no other option. He knows the power is coming from a normal girl who isn’t even a mage, so he’s afraid of draining her. And this isn’t just interpretation — Ayaka literally calls him out on it (after the fight). So right now Richard has three major constraints: • No wish for the Grail • No proper contract • Holding back for Ayaka If/when he overcomes those, he’ll be able to fight the way he’s actually meant to. That doesn’t mean he’s on Gil’s level… Gil and Enkidu are on a tier of their own. But what we’ve seen so far definitely isn’t Richard’s true level.
