There’s some really encouraging news for the bees right now.
Scientists recently discovered a special group of hybrid honeybees in Southern California that are naturally fighting off Varroa mites — the parasite that’s been devastating hives across the country. These bees carry about 68% fewer mites and rarely need harsh chemical treatments.
The resistance even seems to start at the larval stage — the baby bees are just less appealing to the mites.
Right now, Varroa mites are by far the biggest threat to honeybees. They weaken the bees and spread deadly viruses. Other stressors like pesticides, poor nutrition, and habitat loss make things worse, but Varroa is the main driver behind the massive colony losses we’ve been seeing.
Stories like this give me hope. Nature is resilient.
What do you think — should we celebrate these tough little California bees? 🐝💛
