Portal kids- can we stop with the “after much consideration, thought, prayer, reflection nonsense? 95% of you made this decision months ago. It’s OK, no need to sugarcoat it. We get it! Put yourself out there and just call what it is. You are leaving and want a new school.

PARENTS: Just a heads up — a lot of kids are not bringing home the full story of what was discussed in their exit meetings, only the parts they want you to hear.

The best thing to learn as an athlete is to take criticism. It’s a privilege to be coached. It says the coach believes in you and what you can grow into. Don’t take it as an insult when they try to change something, thats the greatest compliment. Show them you can be coachable.

As an AD, the growing trend of individualism is making it harder to sustain winning programs. Great teams are built on sacrifice, accountability, and putting the program above personal goals. Championships still come from “we,” not “me.”

The standard isn’t supposed to be easy. The standard isn’t supposed to be convenient. The standard isn’t supposed to be comfortable. The standard isn’t supposed to be normal. The standard requires that we make a choice: will we live our feelings or our standard?

I texted a coach this morning and asked how the new job was going after about a month. His response was one I’ve heard many times… and lived myself: “Not bad. Some kids pushing back culture wise. Always worried about staff and numbers.” If you go into a program and start making the changes that need to be made, be ready for pushback. That’s normal. My advice to him: Water the good grass. Don’t let the weeds hold you hostage. Too many coaches start looking the other way because they want to keep players and coaches happy. They convince themselves they can slowly change the culture. It doesn’t work that way. Culture doesn’t drift in the right direction. It moves toward the standard you enforce. Stay strong to your principles. The right grass will grow. 🌱🏈 @fastnwide

Loyal assistant coaches matter more than most people realize. They support the vision. They protect the culture. They tell you the truth. Great programs aren’t built by one coach. They’re built by a loyal staff that pulls in the same direction.
