We raised taxes on the people of Providence so the city could give away public properties. There’s a lot of good reasons to not give away public assets. One is financial, public assets can be leveraged in creative ways to pay down pensions. Public assets are meant to benefit the public and when it leaves the hands of individuals who represent the public to ones who don’t we’re taking from the people. Regarding this Carl G Lauro lease it also will increase PPSD’s deficit that the Mayor, Governor, and Council just had a very public feud over. What happens when the schools are in local control and these bad deals catch up with us. The commissioner won’t have injunction power and the Mayors already shown he doesn’t want to pay for our students to have more. This is well documented there’s a book called Reign of Error and they mention Providence specifically. They mention the organization Elorza now runs that’s funded by Trump donors. I’ll be making more content explaining more as this lease gets closer to the full council to vote. I hope the city councilors will reject this lease.
