A delegation from East Cork MD were uniquely honoured last week in Oklahoma when they  met with the Chief Gary Batton and the Choctaw Tribal Council at Choctaw Nation HQ in Durant. This special honour was bestowed to recognise the unique history between the Choctaw Nation and Ireland dating back to 1847 when the Choctaw Nation raised $170 ($5,000 today) to help the Irish during the Great Famine.  Chair of East Cork MD, Cllr Rory Cocking presented Chief Batton with a special edition photograph of “Kindred Spirits”, the sculpture in Midleton that commemorates this act of generosity, unveiled in 2017 and is a powerful symbol of the friendship between the Choctaw Nation and Ireland. Visiting the historical Choctaw capital, Tuskahoma, the delegation also visited the site of “Eternal Heart”, the sister sculpture to “Kindred Spirts”, that symbolises the enduring spirit and resilience of the Choctaw people. The delegation was then welcomed by the Mayor Justin Few of the City of McAlester to explore the establishment of a sister city relationship between McAlester and Midleton and the Mayor and Cllr Cocking signed a proclamation, designating 13 March 2026, as Irish Friendship Day.  As part of this celebration, the delegation visited Puterbaugh Upper Elementary School with the aim of introducing a pen pal arrangement with local East Cork schools and also visited the site of the new McAlester library, presenting a book of photography of Cork by Dennis Horgan, to head librarian, Heath Stanfield, to be placed in the new library, when completed later this year. Finally the delegation celebrated with the City of McAlester and the MAGIC team (McAlester Association for Global Interconnections) at the unveiling of a new sculpture, commissioned to celebrate the relationship between “Kindred Spirits” and “Eternal Heart” that will be placed in the city airport, showcasing this unique relationship between Ireland and Choctaw Nation for all visitors to the city.

📢 **Public Advisory: Hemlock Water Dropwort Found on The Mall Beach, Youghal** Cork County Council is advising the public to avoid touching the Hemlock Water Dropwort plant after it was found washed up on The Mall beach, Youghal. This plant is naturally occurring in Ireland but is known to be highly toxic, and its roots can resemble a parsnip. Direct contact may cause skin irritation, so we ask visitors to take care when walking along the shoreline. Please remain vigilant on beaches in the East Cork area, and ensure that children and pets are kept away from any unfamiliar plants that may have washed ashore. Anyone who believes they may have come into contact with the plant is encouraged to seek advice from a healthcare professional. Cork County Council will continue to monitor the situation and take appropriate steps as needed.

We would like to remind everyone to take care on the roads in the lead‑up to the Bank Holiday weekend and during the St. Patrick’s Day festivals. With the 16–25 age group remaining the highest‑risk category for road users, we held a very successful Multi‑Schools Road Safety Promotion Event on 5th March at the Corrin Events Centre, Fermoy. The event builds on the Council’s expanding Road Safety Education and Promotion Programme and brought together Transition Year and Fifth Year students from five secondary schools across the Avondhu region for an immersive learning experience on responsible road use. With the Bank Holiday approaching, Cork County Council reminds everyone: the road is a shared space - please share it safely. More here: corkcoco.ie/en/news/multi-…
