Today's Exhibit of the Day? A colossal amethyst geode! At ~13 ft (4 m) tall & 9,000 lbs (4,082 kg), it's as heavy as 3 compact cars. Formed 135 million years ago, it started as colorless quartz—becoming purple after millennia of natural radiation, heat, & trace contaminants.

@fern @Mealsandeals Absolutely— Sarge’s in NYC and Manny’s in chicago are both definitely Jewish delis and both serve pork and dairy+meat together. Carnegie deli was like this too— S&P isn’t a deli more because we don’t sell meats by the lb.,

@Mealsandeals @courtstgrocers This opens up an interesting question: can a "Jewish deli" serve non kosher foods?" I would argue kosher deli is style and does not necessarily need to be tied to the laws or Kashrut: see Katz's and Frankels for example.

There is nothing quite like a classic Jewish NY deli. Unparalleled feeling of comfort and satiety. Couldn't even wait to photograph.

@Mealsandeals @fern I’m the 6th Jewish operator of the luncheonette at this location. 70 years ago, in addition to the ham and bacon, and corned beef, and pastrami, there was clam chowder and shrimp salad on the menu.
