19-year-old LaVena Johnson, a US Army Private First Class, was found dead in her tent while stationed in Iraq in 2005. Her death was officially ruled a suicide. She had a broken nose, a black eye, loose teeth, burns from a corrosive chemical on her genital area, and a gunshot wound that many people felt did not fit suicide. There were also reports of bloody footprints outside her living quarters. Some later suspected the chemical burns were meant to destroy DNA evidence of a sexual assault. People were literally holding spaces and writing tweets attacking her for allegedly hating black men. They were even mocking and celebrating her death by saying that she deserved to die at the (alleged) hands of a white man because of her purported hatred for black men. I thought it was important to point out not only the cruelty of those statements, but also how inaccurate they were. Why do you think my observation was irrelevant?
