Life is made up of moments. Some are expected. Others aren’t. When those moments involve your health, having care you trust matters. At CoxHealth, we’re here for the moments that matter most — with the expertise, compassion and commitment our communities count on every day. We've launched a series of new community messages that highlight our role in the moments that matter in the lives of those in our community. Featuring members of our team, these videos are also a heartfelt thank you to our employees, whose work creates moments of comfort, healing and hope for our community. Watch our new Moments That Matter series and see how care shows up across the places we call home.

St. Louis Children’s at CoxHealth is pleased to announce that Matthew N. Alder, MD, PhD, a highly regarded pediatric critical care physician, has been named the inaugural pediatrician-in-chief and chief medical officer at St. Louis Children’s at CoxHealth. He is also a WashU Medicine voluntary clinical professor of pediatrics. Dr. Alder’s new role advances a collaboration between St. Louis Children’s Hospital and CoxHealth — supported by the expertise of WashU Medicine pediatric physicians — to expand access to pediatric specialty care across southwest Missouri. Dr. Alder will oversee the joint venture’s pediatric services at the new St. Louis Children’s at CoxHealth, the only independently licensed pediatric hospital in southwest Missouri. St. Louis Children’s at CoxHealth, which opened March 1 within the walls of Cox South, includes an advanced neonatal intensive care unit, a pediatric intensive care unit, and inpatient pediatric care. “Dr. Alder brings broad experience in pediatric critical care medicine across diverse intensive care unit settings and care teams to his new role, where he also will coordinate and direct strategic initiatives for pediatric specialty care,” says Dr. Paul Scheel Jr., vice chancellor for clinical affairs at WashU Medicine, CEO of WashU Medicine Physicians and president of WashU Medicine & BJC HealthCare Physician Provider Organization. Dr. Alder previously served as an attending physician in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at Cox Medical Center South and is board certified in pediatric critical care. His leadership will be integral to the new, 133,000 square-foot outpatient Specialty Care Center, scheduled to open in 2027 on the Cox South campus. The Center will feature ambulatory surgery, imaging, laboratory services, infusion, pediatric specialty care clinics, and more. Specialties will significantly expand access to advanced pediatric care with the addition of cardiology, hematology, oncology, ophthalmology, surgery, and urology. On a cold Monday in our critical care unit, a simple question changed everything: Could we host a wedding so a mom in comfort care could witness her daughter’s big moment? Our nurses, leaders, a local decorator, photographer, and Food Services team came together within hours to create a beautiful, love‑filled ceremony at Cox Medical Center Branson. Eighteen family members gathered. Makenna and Brett said “I do.” And Leanne, with a front-row seat, saw every moment. This is what caring for families truly means — listening, honoring, and saying yes when it matters most.

Born at 2 lbs., 10 oz. and not expected to survive, Dr. Patricia Dix grew up to spend 50 years caring for high‑risk pregnancies — 37 of them at CoxHealth. “I went from being a preemie to delivering preemies. I’m the proof — have hope.” She delivered thousands of babies, led major programs, and became a foundational leader in maternal‑fetal medicine. Now recently retired, she’s still not slowing down — teaching, volunteering, and continuing to serve families. A life that came full circle.

A new chapter in pediatric care is about to begin for families across southwest Missouri. St. Louis Children’s at CoxHealth is opening on the Cox South campus on March 1, 2026. This marks a major step forward in our mission to elevate pediatric care for families across the region. As the only independently licensed, full-service pediatric facility in southwest Missouri, it brings together nationally recognized clinical expertise from WashU Medicine physicians and a dedicated team of caregivers who are specially trained to provide exceptional, compassionate care close to home. This facility will enable seamless collaboration with @washumedicine and @STLChildrens Hospital teams, and offer advanced services, including neonatal and pediatric intensive care units, as well as inpatient pediatric care. As Vice President and Administrator Sarah Becker shares: “The opening of our pediatric hospital marks an important moment for our community and the patients and families we serve. We are proud to bring together leading physicians and caregivers to ensure every child receives exceptional care right here at home.” This milestone is just one part of our ongoing growth, with the upcoming 133,000-square-foot Specialty Care Center opening in summer 2027. Together, we’re building a stronger future for kids across southwest Missouri.
