@LEGOfoundation @ProjectZeroHGSE @ISBillund You mentioned that you were going to post some of the videos on socials after the conference. I am keen to share some of the amazing practice with my colleagues, in particular, the maths class with the students who know "being wrong is the first step to being right".

The second day of the #PlayfulSchoolsConference2023! Did you join our morning (CEST) session? If not, you can still catch it later at our afternoon session. We would love to hear your key takeaways from today ☺️

@shirky17 I use this to help design them geargenerator.com Gears can be tricky to understand, I love the animation with the gear generator to play with different features to see what works.

gears do you / your students design your own and 3D print/laser cut them what do you use does anything besides size of tooth have to be the same for mesh? (seems size of tooth&# of teeth determines size of gear) #MakerSpace

@emmaphys I do a CUPs activity with them. They are great to remind them what they know and flush out any misconceptions. I normally have props that they can use when discussing in their groups. monash.edu/science-educat… (Click on student worksheets to see a list of the ones developed).

For those who teach Adv-level HS physics, what is your intro force activity? Most (but not all) have done broomball before, but they'll *definitely* need a refresher. Do you do broomball again, or something else? Most had 9th-grade physics, but it's Year 1 for a few Ss. #modphys

@shirky17 I like doing wax stamps (for sealing letters) for learning CAD design for a 3d printer. For laser cutter design I often do simple automata or tea lights. Both exercise spatial skills and design process.

Name tags, keychains, snowflakes seem to be good design projects to start to explore design software features #MakerSpace #MakerEd Other intro projects besides these?

@emwdx @IlyaBaran37 @shirky17 @Onshape Indeed. Connecting with the algebra the students are learning is so valuable. I will have a look at FeatureScript. Onshape couldn't do it back when I checked, so this will be amazing if it is possible now.

@IlyaBaran37 @CraftieK @shirky17 @Onshape Good point - FeatureScript is the way to go, and this is definitely a step in the right direction. I think what we need is something that isn't parametric, as students learning calculus typically use something of the form y=f(x). I'll file this in under 'future project'.

@dailystem Azul, Catan, Forbidden sky (although I wish the electrical connections were better), Ticket to ride, Carcassone, Wingspan. Pretty much anything except Candyland/Monopoly/Game of Life (pure chance games).

@emwdx @shirky17 Is Solidworks still the only appropriate CAD that students can put in a cartesian equation and do a revolution to create a volume? When I checked 7 years ago the other student friendly CAD packages didn't have this ability. It is really valuable for maths students.

@shirky17 It is more the drivers for the machines. I worked at a mac school and needed a PC to run our CNC and laser cutter. Added complexity with fonts and the like.

@KaleidoscopeSci @MichaelCRalph I am in Australia, so our PhD programs are a bit different to the US. The coursework I did was around research skills and it is just my research that is specific. Is there anything in particular you would like to know? DM me if it is easier.
