In aanloop naar het bezoek aan het Witte Huis van vanavond, legde ik een krans bij het Graf van de Onbekende Soldaat en bezocht ik de graven van vier Nederlandse mariniers op Arlington National Cemetery. Op deze indrukwekkende militaire begraafplaats liggen meer dan 400.000 Amerikaanse veteranen en hun familieleden begraven. Hier rusten onder meer soldaten die hun leven hebben gegeven om Europa te bevrijden in de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Ook het graf van George C. Marshall is hier. Hij was de man achter de Marshallhulp die Europa hielp in de wederopbouw na de oorlog. Dit is slechts één voorbeeld van hoe cruciaal de banden met de VS zijn voor onze welvaart en veiligheid. Zowel voor Nederland als voor Europa. 🇳🇱🇺🇸

Ahead of this evening’s visit to the White House, I laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and visited the graves of four Dutch marines at Arlington National Cemetery. More than 400,000 American veterans and their families are buried at this impressive military cemetery. They include soldiers who gave their lives to liberate Europe during the Second World War. The grave of George C. Marshall is also here. He was the man behind the Marshall Plan, the recovery programme that supported Europe’s reconstruction after the war.
