You can now earn a PhD in China by creating a product instead of writing a 100-page dissertation! China has grown tired of PhD students writing research papers that no one reads and is now demanding that they build real products instead. This radical shift in the philosophy of higher education in China represents a formal transition from "textual academia" to "utilitarian academia," where the traditional doctoral dissertation is replaced by the creation of a tangible product. The brilliance of this idea lies in its direct approach to the scourge of "dead research" that consumes years of researchers' efforts only to remain locked away in drawers, thus transforming the university from an intellectual silo into a productive engine that feeds the market and fosters innovation immediately.

First-ever case: human develops cancer from tapeworm cells. In a groundbreaking medical discovery, scientists have confirmed the first documented instance of a human developing invasive, cancer-like tumors caused by cells from a parasitic tapeworm rather than their own body. The patient—a 41-year-old man with advanced HIV—presented with tumors spreading through his lungs, liver, and lymph nodes. At first glance, the growths resembled typical human cancer. However, detailed genetic analysis by researchers from the CDC and physicians in Colombia revealed something extraordinary: the malignant cells carried no human DNA. Instead, they were genetically identical to Hymenolepis nana, the dwarf tapeworm—a common intestinal parasite. Essentially, the tapeworm itself had developed cancer within the patient’s body, and its cancerous cells then spread aggressively throughout his organs. This bizarre phenomenon appears to have occurred because the man’s severely weakened immune system—compromised by untreated HIV—allowed the parasite’s stem-like cells to proliferate uncontrollably. Although these tapeworm-derived cancer cells were roughly ten times smaller than typical human cancer cells, they displayed the same invasive and lethal behavior. The case underscores a dangerous overlap between widespread parasitic infections and immune-suppressing conditions like HIV, especially in regions where both are common. Such tumors could easily be mistaken for conventional cancer, delaying proper diagnosis and treatment. Sadly, the patient died shortly after the true nature of his condition was identified. Researchers continue to study this unprecedented disease process to better understand its implications for global health and improve detection in vulnerable populations.
