He notified Trade, Industry, and Competition Minister Parks Tau in writing, but did not disclose the reasons for his decision. Pityana, who turned 80 earlier this month, was appointed in September 2022 after a bruising two-year legal and political standoff over leadership at the troubled regulator. His appointment came at a time when the NLC was reeling from widespread corruption scandals linked to its controversial “proactive funding” model, which enabled the misappropriation of hundreds of millions of rands.
