@LanceMcAlister Have you seen the Eric Davis interview on All The Smoke? He tells you why it's about the coaching, the coaches changed EDs game until Pete Rose unlocked him. Best interview I'd ever seen. The @reds have locked these players up. #fpstate=ive&vld=cid:aa402082,vid:PQQFWEzqtys,st:0" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">google.com/search?q=Eric+…

Hitting .214 with a .637 OPS in 197 games since the surgery is a sample size large enough to at least prompt a discussion within....
LanceMcAlister@LanceMcAlister

After a disaster of a 2025 season, the hope for Matt McLain was that being another year removed from his 2024 shoulder surgery he'd be better this season. Here's the sad and alarming reality: He's shown a decline across the board in offensive production. Year-BA-OBP-SLG-OPS-OSP+ 2025 .220-.300-.343-.643, 75 2026: .198-.296-.326-.622, 73 Yes, his strikeout rate has dipped, while his walk rate has slightly ticked up. And he's been among one of the most selective hitters in MLB this season. The problem is, he's doing little with the strikes he's swinging at. He's seen a dip from 2025, in exit velocity, hard hit rate and barrel rate. After Monday, he has dropped to .198 for the season. He's hit .184 over his last 39 games. He's been wildly inconsistent. He's currently in an 0 for 19 rut. Prior to that, he was 13 for 41. But prior to that, he was 0 for 17. Combined, that's .169 over his last 23 games. There is no question he's playing stellar defense. He takes an 85 game errorless streak into tonight's game. That's the third longest by a Cincinnati Reds 2B since 1900. But that doesn't make him an everyday player. That makes him, at best, a late inning defensive replacement, and pinch-runner. We are a long way from the Matt McLain that got 2023 Rookie of the Year votes. Something has to give.....I see three options: 1. Reduce his role to coming off the bench, with a combo of Sal Stewart and Spencer Steer splitting time at 2nd. 2. Call up Edwin Arroyo and insert him into the everyday lineup, with McLain going back to Louisville with the hope of creating production and confidence. After watching him this season, Jim Kelch (Bats Radio) told me he thinks Arroyo is more comfortable at 2B, than SS. 3. Send Will Benson or T.J. Friedl down, to get regular at-bats at Louisville. Both have clearly fallen to the end of the roster. Call up Arroyo and platoon him with McLain. McLain has been better vs LHP in his career. The switch-hitting Arroyo is hitting .342 vs RHP and .260 vs LHP. What can't happen, is the status quo. It's not working, or helping.....anyone.

@LanceMcAlister The @Reds are scared that McLain may not get his job back if Arroyo is called up and he takes it. Friedl isn't playing much, Marté should get the call up as well. Benson offers more in case he runs into one and he's much better defensively. Just my two cents.

@LanceMcAlister This is the move from an out of sorts and over their head front office. Hinds most certainly will be picked up. For a sorry catcher!!!!

@RedsDaily4 This is absurd! The @Reds front office is clueless. You don't make this move to add a no good Catcher to the 40 man. Let Duno fill in if need be.

I know a lot of people are going to disagree with me here. Rece Hinds has had 51 plate appearances against big league pitching. ONLY 51!! Will he ever figure it out in the majors? Maybe. Maybe not. But the Reds have 100 relievers who can’t throw the ball over the plate and they DFA a guy with massive upside because of 51 plate appearances. I don’t get it.
Mr. Olivares@BigRedDynasty

@RedsDaily4 Couldn’t disagree more. Anyone who has watched Rece Hinds struggle immensely at the major league level in multiple seasons knows he should be DFA’d. he cannot hit major league pitching.

Dear Lord, Today, I’m done watering relationships that only stay alive when I overextend myself. I’m not dimming who I am just to keep people at ease anymore. Teach me not to return to patterns You’ve been trying to break me free from. And if distance is necessary, give me the maturity to let people go without needing closure, revenge, or another conversation. In Jesus’ name. Amen🙏🏾

@Reds @PNCBank Scrub for a scrub in the lead off position. Benson is the same player he was last year as a full time major leaguer who can’t bat .200. He should not be on the major league roster.

Votto lives in New Smyrna and will stop by the facility once or twice a week. Usually just watches BP and gives guys swing tips. He’s been working a lot with Tyson Lewis over the past few weeks. Lewis is 11 for his last 22.
LanceMcAlister@LanceMcAlister

Great to hear Joey Votto has been in Daytona with @daytonatortugas. Tonight on the Inside Pitch, you will hear from 20-year old SS Tyson Lewis (2nd round/2024) about what it's been like working with Votto. Big thanks @MatthewMounsey2 for passing along the conversation!

@Reds This team's roster management is frustrating. Hinds hardly played and Dunn isn't going to play when they could put Marté back in right field and leave him alone. Then you move McLain down to 9th hole like he and Friedl aren't still back to back.

@RedsDaily4 Why not try Benson, Hinds, Myers, or Steer tonight? Put Friedl on the IL to remove Tito decisions for the next 10 days or so and bring up Bleday.

@LanceMcAlister This is all I need to read, IL TJ and move on for the next 10-15 days! "TJ Friedl’s .154 slugging percentage is the worst among 188 qualified big leaguer. Cincinnati’s outfield production as a whole has amounted to just a 39 wRC+."

Results-Sample size-Roster decisions: Every #Redsm fan is looking for a spark for the offense. Noelvi Marte struggled and went down after 15 games. Rece Hinds became a fan favorite. He came up and has gone 0 for 10 in three games. Now, many fans want JJ Bleday. How would you approach things if you were Nick Krall? We are 19 games into a 162 game season. That's 8.5% of the season. What do you consider a good sample size to make a decision on a player? Do numbers like exit velocity and batting average on balls in player, matter? Does the fact the Reds are 11-8 and tied for first, factor into your decision making? I laugh, because I go through this with my fantasy baseball team on a daily basis. The struggles of Nick Kurtz, Bobby Witt Jr., Wyatt Langford and Michael Busch having me pulling my hair out. I'm stuck. They are too good to release. But they are killing my weekly matchup. Thoughts?
