Treating #PoliceCorruption as an investigative problem misses the point. Corrupt cops often operate in networks that evade complaint-driven systems. Police heads must ensure internal accountability, intelligence-led investigations and disciplinary action. ISS Today #SouthAfrica crimehub.org/iss-today/nati…

𝗨𝗽𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗦𝗔 𝗮 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗿𝘂𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 Organised crime and corruption thrive in secrecy, corroding democratic institutions and paving the way for authoritarianism. South Africa's criminal justice system is reactive and fragmented, allowing criminal networks to outpace the state. President Ramaphosa's new disruption programme signals a shift from enforcement to early intervention. This upstreaming approach is about more than data sharing; it requires alignment across agencies, expanded mandates for regulatory bodies, and a culture shift from passive record-keeping to active risk detection. Used strategically, South Africa’s upstream capabilities can take the sting out of #OrganisedCrime and #corruption. Regulatory bodies like the JSE, CIPC and Public Service Commission can help the justice system disrupt illicit money lifecycles. ISS Today by Colette Ashton crimehub.org/iss-today/upst…

South Africa’s continued reliance on emergency measures like military deployment highlights a deeper policy failure: the absence of a sustained, well-resourced plan to prevent violence. Over successive national strategies, prevention has been sidelined in favour of reactive criminal justice responses. This approach overlooks the complex drivers of violence and depends heavily on underfunded civil society organisations and poorly coordinated government departments. Without prioritising prevention in national planning, SA risks remaining trapped in cycles of violence, costly interventions and limited long-term impact. Without a deliberate and properly funded #ViolencePrevention plan, South Africa will keep paying high prices for short-term measures like military deployments. ISS Today by Chandré Gould on how 16 years of government planning have failed to prioritise preventing violence. crimehub.org/iss-today/plan…

For over a decade, #SouthAfrica’s national plans have prioritised reacting to crime over preventing it. This explains rising violence and the resort to costly interventions like army deployments that offer short-term relief but no lasting solution. ISS Today crimehub.org/iss-today/plan…

But lasting progress requires acting earlier, before criminal networks and corrupt practices take hold. Join the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) and the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to explore how prevention, data-driven risk detection and stronger collaboration between government, business and civil society can disrupt corruption and organised crime, helping the country get ahead of the problem. 📅 Friday, 27 March 2026 ⏰ 09:30 – 12:30 (GMT+2) 📍 Radisson Blu Gautrain Hotel, Sandton or online via ISS Zoom Register now: crimehub.org/events/prevent…

𝗦𝗔 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗲𝘀, 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗯 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 President Ramaphosa's declaration of gender-based violence as a national disaster is an important signal. But what does it mean in practice when relations between government and NGOs – who provide most services to women and children – are tainted by unfulfilled promises, funding delays and a lack of trust? Given the severity of the crisis and the country’s strained fiscal environment, smart solutions that don’t reinvent the wheel are needed. Rebuilding trust is key. It requires rethinking how decisions are made, how power is shared, and how engagements are facilitated. Models like the Violence Prevention Forum show this is possible.
