My BFF’s MIL asked me to paint something in honor of her husband, a former @FDNY firefighter, as a gift for his pulmonologist who has treated many first responders. As a NYer, with a (retired) cop father, it was an honor.

When they see a mentor admit that this job is hard and it’s okay to be emotionally affected, they realize that it’s not abnormal. Your trainees are lucky to have you.

It has taken a lot of intentional work with my trainees for them to know that it’s always ok to tell me they aren’t ok. And I model sharing my struggles as appropriate to normalize having ups and downs. But not everyone has this or will feel safe in every situation.

Much of the advice for tending #MentalHealth advises struggling individuals to reach out for help when needed. This is important but misses many #MedEd trainees who try to hold it together alone. As leaders, we can help by asking people we see struggling if they need resources.
