@NegroSunshyne So Seidensticker would be the only major use of stress as a unit of organization. Hartmann did it also, but his work in #tanka isn't major.

@NegroSunshyne The French takeme is a stress pattern of 2-3-2-3-3, but I have not actively hunted down examples of the stress patterns. It's really no different from the suggestion of using iambic pentameter couplets -- 5 stresses per line would be 10 stresses.

@IpsaHerself @juliusorlovsky #Tanka is made up of five parts, typically written on 1 line in Japanese and 5 lines in English. Experiments are done with other numbers of lines.

@NegroSunshyne There are very few #tanka as well known in English as the classical Japanese ones, so it's important to give credit to the original when doing so.

@Circa1981AD It had a large impact on my understanding of #tanka -- how the Heian tanka poets who lived through all this tuned it out on purpose. They wanted idealism and escapism.

@Circa1981AD Hojoki is an astonishing record. It's the antidote to all the romanticization of the Heian period.

@john34239 Oh, that wasn't mine. You are referring to:
Today at Pearl Harbor,
From the shore line,
At highest tide,
A gossamer mist,
With the deepest stillness.

@john34239 This reminds me of a #tanka by John Daleiden:
mourners assemble
after Joe’s funeral—
they come
to pick widow Green’s apples and press out the amber juice
