@heitner The one thing you must remember as this evolves, the NCAA isn’t about the kids. Every answer is vague and open for a reason.

Still getting many questions from athletes and coaches on whether the NCAA changing to a 5-in-5 rule (5 seasons in 5 years) would grandfather in current athletes. It's not clear, but the NCAA did recently hint at the possibility of doing so.
Darren Heitner@heitner

@RossDellenger Although this does stick out: "We are evaluating all options to ensure a smooth transition to the new eligibility framework, including for current student-athletes who matriculated under the current framework."

Per the NCAA: The Cabinet did not take a formal position on the topic or the concept itself but did support NCAA staff continuing to discuss the idea with other stakeholders to gather additional feedback.
Pete Thamel@PeteThamel

UPDATE: The NCAA DI Cabinet will hold a further discussion on age-based eligibility later today. This idea would essentially eliminate redshirts and give college athletes five years of eligibility starting when you graduate high school or when you turn 19. Whichever is earlier.

2-time Stanley Cup champion Jonathan Quick is retiring after almost two decades in the NHL, one of the best goaltenders of this generation. #NH hockey fans remember his days with the @MonarchsHockey, playing 2 seasons in the Queen City. Appearance by @ChrisRyan603 in this clip!

@RebelsOlsen It seems to me the focus is in the wrong area. 4 in 5, with a yr for injury red shirt etc I get. You play your 4 and move on. It’s the exemptions and extension that are the real issues. Kids getting 6 years? The HS recruit is getting squeezed far too hard.

We need to think hard about what “5-for-5” means if it’s made retroactive for athletes already in college. This is where the math breaks. The average D1 softball roster is roughly 23–24 players. A normal incoming class is about 5–6 freshmen. Normally, that works because you expect seniors to graduate and roster spots to open. But if this rule becomes immediate/retroactive and current players get that extra flexibility too, the normal turnover disappears. The math: ✔️24 current players 🔄even if only 2–3 more stay than usual 🧳plus 5–6 incoming freshmen already committed Now you’re suddenly trying to fit 27–30 players into 25 spots. That is not a small adjustment. That is a roster jam. And when the math doesn’t work, the KIDS get squeezed: -current players -committed recruits -or the next class behind them Schools may not want to cut kids. Coaches may not want to pull back offers. But if this is retroactive, somebody pays for it. That’s why this matters. This isn’t just a rules debate. It’s real players, real families, and real recruiting plans getting caught in the middle. If 5-for-5 passes, should it apply immediately to current athletes? #NCAASoftball #SoftballRecruiting #CollegeSoftball #TransferPortal

Hey Congress, a post-grad year should not count against a player's NCAA eligibility. Not sure exactly if that's what this means but I'm just throwing it out there @NCAA @NABC1927 @YahooSports
Yahoo Sports@YahooSports

The NCAA is exploring a significant change to its eligibility rule, per Yahoo Sports’ @RossDellenger. Next week, an NCAA committee will discuss a new age-based standard for athlete eligibility that would grant athletes five full years of eligibility from the time of their 19th birthday or their high school graduation. No waiver requests, redshirts or exceptions will be permitted, except for a small group of outliers (those on maternity leave, military service or religious missions).

@c0verthespread @CoachM_AOFhoops @NCAA @NABC1927 @YahooSports Current athletes get redshirt year plus 4 yrs. of eligibility. Under the proposed rule, kids who take a gap-year still get 4 yrs. of eligibility, so they're no worse off than the current system. They're just trading a redshirt year for a gap year.

@CroninMt @CoachM_AOFhoops @NCAA @NABC1927 @YahooSports But because of this madness. He got Pushed to d2 We cannot distract from hundreds of real talent being over looked by maturity. That never was the case for this sport D1s recruited talented Scrawny Kids & made them all Americans. We need to get back to this

@c0verthespread @CoachM_AOFhoops @NCAA @NABC1927 @YahooSports That’s fine, but that’s moving the goal post after a decision has been made. You’re saying 5 years but the PG is high school. In football you’re often competing against 19 yr olds coming out of HS. 24 age limit? Just 4 yrs of playing with redshirt limitations? 1 redshirt only?

@CroninMt @CoachM_AOFhoops @NCAA @NABC1927 @YahooSports I believe it should apply now for everyone. If u played 5 years u shouldn’t be seeking eligibility. Way too much talent is getting pushed to d2 & JUCO because of this. Some kids grind their way back to d1 & some don’t either way it’s not good Bennet Stirtz been HIGH d1 since HS

@c0verthespread @CoachM_AOFhoops @NCAA @NABC1927 @YahooSports Thats fine, I understand that argument but do you do it going forward? What about the kids that are already in college? I’m curious what you do about these changes. Does it change for those in HS going forward or everyone? Any feel for what the approach?

@CoachM_AOFhoops @NCAA @NABC1927 @YahooSports Yes it should. We need to end this madness Matt. A post grad year just gives false hope. Kids should have 4 years to get it together. If we allow post grads we still will have 19-20 year olds competing against 17-18 year olds for a scholarship spot

@NotLSBoysLax It would expedite things if they could just get d1 down to 4 teams. Then we could have a d2 public state championship.

Longmeadow dropped down to D2 in recent years, just like other storied programs have done (Hingham, Duxbury, Billerica, Reading, Marshfield, Walpole). These are some of the very best boys lacrosse squads in the state of MA. A very unfortunate trend but who can blame them.

@weissie20 Hockey is August to April. They ruined having multi sport athletes long ago. Club and multi-sport is nothing but a myth at this point. It’s sad as the kids have become ATMs

Youth hockey coaches say they want multi-sport athletes, until schedules conflict. The best players often excel in other sports. Prioritize compatible sports and 100% commitment to finishing seasons, not being threatened by cross-training. #YouthSports #AthleteDevelopment

The NCAA D1 Cabinet will vote next week on 5 years of eligibility for all athletes. Per @RossDellenger the 5-year would give athletes five full years of eligibility from the time of their 19th birthday or their high school graduation, whichever is earliest.

@BjDots It’s a tough one, as coaches clearly lean towards the Catholics and certainly the NEPSAC. It’s easier for them, and you see kids play against top competition. It’s that kid that thinks or is told he’s got it, that can quickly get lost at these schools.

@CroninMt Absolutely makes sense depending on the situation. Some programs can improve a kid’s chances of competing at the next level. There are many examples of this. However, other kids just end up with very little interest from colleges and a hefty tuition bill.

I am tired of the celebrating transfers to the NEPSAC schools. If you want to go to a high academic college then the path from a high academic school can help. Otherwise stay at your high school with your friends and play in front of crowded gyms/rinks/fields.

Im putting my career on the line but it’s time for change in Massachusetts. This isn’t just about Publics vs Privates anymore. It’s about the playoff format and what the data from 2013 to today actually shows. No opinions. Just the cold hard facts. You won’t want to miss this: youtu.be/vl7i8brbmyk?si

@CroninMt @danarestia The going rate feels to be about $15. Pretty sure that’s what I paid at Yale, UDel, Lehigh & Rutgers but I wouldn’t be surprised if any of those were $20. I think I paid $35 for Syracuse ND last season but I was in the assigned seats section.
