Our plants have begun producing female flowers ♀️ - identified by the inferior ovary beneath the petals, which will develop into fruit once pollination occurs. 🐝 The flowers in the picture are from a round-fruited variety, as evident from the shape of the ovary! 🍈

Our gourd plants are in bloom! 💮 Gourds usually produce unisexual flowers. In pictures you can see male flowers ♂️ lacking the inferior ovary! @DBS_IISERM @IiserMohali

Sperm have long been thought of as streamlined DNA delivery vehicles, carrying little more than a father’s genes to the egg. But a new study shows that in mice, sperm may transmit the father’s influence in another way. During their passage through the epididymis, the coiled tube where they mature after leaving the testes, sperm pick up messenger RNAs (mRNAs), RNA transcripts of genes that contain the genetic instructions for making proteins. These mRNAs seem to be transferred to the fertilized egg, where they may affect the developing embryo. Learn more: scim.ag/3R8RUZ2 @NewsfromScience
