@T2Rugby “Stupidity from MLR recruiters” or professionalism because we have crossed our Is and dotted our Ts. Each team has worked insanely hard to fill their rosters. This is average journalism.

More stupidity from MLR recruiters. Drake Davis is a 6 ft 4 in 113 kg beast of an athlete, possibly one of the best raw athletes 🇺🇸 USA Rugby has been able to get, and at the back end of last season Houston he was just beginning to find his feet as a rugby player and scoring some superb tries on route to helping them to the final, has now got no club for this upcoming season. This is a talent who could have been a wildcard Eagles pick for 2027 and with his size and speed could have maybe learnt back row over time as well. Instead now one of the best raw athletes (and one of very few African Americans) in the league and all the work gone into making him a rugby player has just gone to waste.
Tier 2 Rugby@T2Rugby

Who, if anybody, is going to give a chance to Drake Davis next year? He was improving over the course of last season at Houston and would be a negligent if USA Rugby lets all that work to turn his superb athleticism into a rugby player went to waste.

The @usmlr Disciplinary page has been updated and it already has one interesting entry! The @NEFreeJacks have been penalised for violating the League's Anti-Tempering Policy, receiving a Salary Cap Deduction for #MLR2026, and their 2026 1st Rd Draft pick moves to @AnthemRugby!

@SamLStandsUp For me it goes back to your teams strengths and weaknesses. If you have a heavy team you’ve probably got a team that can defend drives better than chasing long kicks! Structured start points are easier to defend from than unstructured scenarios if you’re a big man too!

@CrossDefence Would that still be the approach when playing a side like Exeter who are significantly better attacking from a lineout than from open play?

Busy week for the Substack! This article is part of the regular Friday Tactics series. The question is whether you should kick to touch from your own 22 or keep the ball in play. It turns out not all teams know the answer... open.substack.com/pub/samlarner/…

@SamLStandsUp Risk vs Reward. Bigger, heavier sides with a Setpiece focus should always try to protect their big men by kicking the ball out. No good comes from keeping the ball on the field for the big boys!

@SamLStandsUp Are we thinking about this the right way? Does it not depend on the strengths and weaknesses of your team vs the opposition?
