Big Update: Sweden Plans Tougher Citizenship Rules Sweden is preparing one of its biggest citizenship reforms, with the Government now submitting a formal proposal to the Council on Legislation. The goal is to strengthen the value of Swedish citizenship and ensure that new citizens are well‑established in Swedish society. Here’s what the proposed changes include: ✨ Residency requirement increasing from 5 to 8 years ✨ Higher standards for lifestyle and conduct ✨ A new self‑sufficiency requirement (approx. SEK 20,000/month) ✨ Mandatory Swedish language skills & civic knowledge ✨ Phase-out of the simplified notification process If approved, the new rules are planned to enter into force on 6 June 2026. This marks a major shift in Sweden’s approach to naturalisation, aiming to reinforce integration, encourage participation in society, and ensure that citizenship reflects both rights and responsibilities. At Crown World Mobility, we are here to help you stay informed and navigate this evolving landscape of rules and regulations. If you or your organization need guidance, feel free to contact us, we are here to support you every step of the way. #CrownMobility #SwedenImmigration #SwedishCitizenship #CitizenshipReform #MobilityExperts #ImmigrationUpdates

📢 SWEDEN | New Government Proposal: EES Registration 📢 On 27 January 2026, the Swedish Government published new proposals that would reintroduce mandatory registration for EES citizens staying in Sweden for more than three months. The proposals, presented in SOU 2026:9 – Registrering av EES‑medborgare, outline several important changes to how residence rights may be administered. (For the full proposal: bit.ly/45z9wlp) 📌 Key Highlights: - Mandatory registration for EES nationals staying over three months - The Swedish Migration Agency may collect photographs and fingerprints as part of the registration process - Biometric data may be verified against passports or national ID cards - No storage of photographs, fingerprints, or biometric data - The Migration Agency may order EES citizens to complete registration, with the option to impose a fine - The Police Authority may check registration status if an individual is believed to have stayed longer than - three months - Deregistration may occur if the conditions for residence rights are no longer met 📊Amendment to the Aliens Act The inquiry also proposes removing the exception in Chapter 8, Section 6a. This would require third‑country nationals who are unlawfully in Sweden but hold a valid permit in another EU country to first be instructed to travel there. Only if they do not comply can a removal or expulsion decision be made. 🔎 What this means: - Employers may need to update onboarding and compliance processes - Individuals will need to complete registration proactively and within the required timeframe - Mobility programs may need to adjust timelines and internal procedures Crown World Mobility is monitoring these developments closely and will continue to provide clear, practical updates as the legislative process progresses. ✨Be sure to follow Crown World Mobility for ongoing insights on immigration, mobility and compliance across the Nordics. ✨
