I understand people thought my last post was satire. So let me explain further. Priests should not have to debate laymen, for the same reason that teachers should not have to argue with their students. Teachers should teach; students should listen. We have a priest class for a reason. They are in positions of authority for a reason. Our society has identified their spiritual gifts and chosen them to be spiritual leaders. After years of training, in which they grapple with the heaviest spiritual matters, they emerge with a deep understanding of the faith. If you don’t see this, it’s probably because you lack the training yourself (or worse). There is simply no way for the uneducated layman to judge the ability of the priest. Can you, dear layman, really claim to understand the subtle nuances of the Greek versus Hebrew translations, like a trained priest does? Of course you can’t. And yet, for some reason, you think a “debate" between priest and layman would be a good idea. Priests are not your peers. They know this and feel it internally. You should listen to what they say, do what they recommend, pay your tithes, and you will get closer to God. And you’d better pray that our political leaders are doing the same.
