@wesstreeting You can’t rebuild Britain while punishing the very people who create growth, jobs and investment. High taxes, endless regulation and anti-business policies are choking innovation and ambition. A country that wants a better future needs to reward enterprise, not penalise it.

In times of greatest peril our country has been capable of doing big things. We still can. Britain used to punch above its weight in the world. We still can. Each generation used to provide a better future for the next. We still can.

Britain used to lead the world in innovation, industry and ambition. Now we punish risk-taking, enterprise and investment with ever higher taxes and regulation. Taxation kills innovation. You don’t build a stronger country by squeezing the people creating jobs, homes and businesses. If Britain wants to “do big things” again, government needs to get out of the way and let people build.

Do they really check your social media history on entry to the US? I have to go…and it’s just dawned on me I’ve slagged off that obese orange sex offender, about once every four hours, for over a decade.

If the government wants lower rents, it should stop treating private landlords as a cash machine. You cannot reduce supply through taxation and regulation while demand keeps rising, then act shocked when rents and housing benefit costs explode.
KWAJO- Social Issues Campaigner@Kwajotweneboa

Britain spends around £37 billion a year subsidising rents because we failed to build enough social housing. A huge amount of that money goes straight into the private rental market because there are not enough social homes. Instead of investing in homes people can actually afford, taxpayers are funding an endless housing crisis 🧵👇🏽

The irony is the government is simultaneously relying on the private rental sector while taxing and regulating private landlords into extinction. Mortgage interest relief was stripped away, costs exploded, landlords sold up, rental supply fell — and rents rose. Policy failure created this.

One thing that doesn't get talked about enough is how @AndyBurnhamGM made bus travel free for 16-18 year olds with OurPass - it made such a massive difference to my family financially and gave me the freedom to explore our city region for the first time. It was also one of the main reasons I became interested in politics and after realising how much impact the Mayor could have through devolution in Greater Manchester.

@RachelReevesMP Rents are soaring because private landlords are being fleeced with punitive taxes and regulations. Small landlords can’t even fully offset mortgage interest, while corporate investors can. Those extra costs don’t disappear — they get passed straight through to tenants.

Growth higher than forecast, borrowing down, and now inflation falling further than expected. This Labour government has the right economic plan.

Private landlords are selling up in droves due to punitive tax rules that are driving rents even higher. A landlord operating through a limited company can offset mortgage interest against tax, while private landlords cannot. The result? Policy that favours large corporate landlords like Lloyds and wealthy investors, while squeezing out ordinary landlords and reducing rental supply.

This government backs small businesses. For too long, they have been forced to waste time chasing late payments, costing the economy and forcing businesses to close. We are delivering the toughest action in a generation to make sure small businesses are paid on time.

This looks and sounds so dodgy. The only way to lift any suspicion is to publish all the documentation and the analysis by HMRC. Is the same treatment available to any ordinary citizen or small business?
