If it does play a biological role, it likely operates through nontraditional mechanisms—possibly as a transient signaling molecule, neuromodulator, or something even less understood. If DMT is present in the brain but does not behave like a conventional neurotransmitter, could it represent a completely different class of neural signal—perhaps one that operates only under rare physiological states such as extreme stress, dreaming, or altered consciousness?
