It is dishonest to ignore the nuances of the covert and overt coercion that sustained the slave trade. What do you think happened when a community refused to sell slaves to the Europeans? Do you think they simply said "awww" and walked away? Are you unaware of the arms race trap? Where warring factions were armed against each other - and superior weaponry meant destruction if you couldn't match your enemy fire for fire? Guess what they wanted for the guns? That's right - slaves! If you didn't agree to sell, they simply either sponsored a war against you by arming your enemies, who would decimate and sell you. Or they would depose (often kill) your kings and chiefs and replace them with more compliant ones. The European slave traders turned African (often territorial) skirmishes into full-blown existential enslave-or-be-enslaved wars. Do you think some kings didn't try to resist? Ask about Oba Ozere (Ovonramwen) of Benin Kingdom, Queen Nzinga Mbandi (Ndongo and Matamba), The Almany of Futa Toro (Abdul Kader Kan), King Afonso I of Kongo (Nzinga Mbemba). They mostly paid with their lives or estate, failing to stop what seemed the inexorable power of the European slave traders at the time.

The Ashanti Kingdom in present-day Ghana was so heavily involved in the slave trade that the Danes even named a slave ship after their king, Osei Kwame Panyin, who ruled from 1777 to 1803. Should the Ashanti kingdom also compensate the humans it traded for material wealth?

Abstention does not mean they didn't vote. It means they voted to abstain. In moral questions where harm is clear, abstention is not the neutral fence many people think it is. It’s a refusal to stand on the side of accountability, and in essence aligns with opposition (especially in this case). If the determination of the guilt and punishment of your child's rapist was put to a vote, and your neighbours in the jury voted not to say 'yes' or 'no', how would you feel? Would you trust them ever again? Would you ever think of them as allies? Do you understand?

By the way, if you're African and you're new to geopolitical awareness, you can use this picture as a guide to know who is on your side and who is your enemy in this world. Notice how China and Russia voted? Then notice how your oyibo faves voted (or abstained, which is also a type of vote)? Shebi "not everything is about race"? You see how white people ALWAYS instinctively bunch together, from Andorra to Norway, whenever it's time to do some racist shit? That's called Pan-Europeanism. The antidote is Pan-Africanism.

The UK has abstained on a UN vote, by Ghana, calling on former colonial powers to pay reparations for the slave trade. There are roughly 7 million slaves in Africa today, perhaps they should focus on that if they are so morally outraged by it? The UK was also the first country in the entire history of humanity to end slavery, costing British lives and a debt we have only just recently paid off. We’ve done our part, in fact, we’ve done more than any other nation ever.

Imagine if you can: An assailant puts a gun to your head and asks you to sell your car to him. Of course you do - what choice do you have? Months later, he was apprehended but you could not make any kind of reparatory claims because he and the police agreed that you were paid for the car. "Weren't you paid for the car you sold?" Will you pretend that you didn't know that failure to sell slaves often resulted in invasion? Or the arming of other clans or villages with superior firepower so they could hunt and sell? Are you unaware that noncompliant kings were routinely deposed or assassinated, and replaced with loyal puppets who kept the 'goods' flowing? Victim blaming is a disease that can only be cured by a good dose of empathy, unlearning the slaver's rhetoric and scrutinizing their single, one-sided story

I don’t quite understand the slavery reparations debate. Strangers came asking for people, and you captured and sold your own people without much resistance, trading them for goods. The people were then used to build economies through farming and hard labor abroad.

Only a Nigerian Christian can write with all seriousness on Olusegun Obasanjo's internet in the year 2026 AD that Israel - the country founded by literal religious terrorists who drove indignes off their land with a bombing campaign - has a "unique history of battling oppression". You people are not real.
Elikem@kiDontHEbLoK

@DavidHundeyin @Uncle_Thi Why is Israel voting against this? I thought they would resonate with anti-slavery motion, given their unique history of battling oppression.

This is a retarded, self-contradictory revisionist submission. @grok It's totally out of sync with historical context, and a horrid retelling of one of the most systematic and effective ethnic cleansing in recent history. But before I get to that, I'll point out that you first Straw Man'd the original post by subtly redefining wiped out as "deliberate mass killing/genocide". He didn't say that - and 'wiped out' means 'wiped out': the systematic and absolute removal of a distinct people from the national existence. Your 'debunking' is just an unfaithful description of the mechanics used to wipe out the blacks. You failed to mention Domingo's Eugenist campaigns in books and speeches decrying the blacks as the cause of backwardness and stating his desire "to remove the savages from all American social questions, for whom we feel, without remedy, an invincible disgust". You neglected to speak about how the state literally carried out a campaign called Blanqueamiento (whitening): a devilish, multifaceted social engineering feat that literally wiped out black people from Argentina. What you maliciously framed as interracial mixing as though it was romantic intermarriages, was exactly the opposite - it was weaponized breeding to escape the segregation, the poverty and illegal status of being black. You didn't mention caste systems based on skin shades. You didn't mention how black men were forcefully conscripted and treated like cannon fodder in the Paraguayan war where it often meant certain death. You didn't mention that it caused a massive, artificial demographic collapse because there weren't enough males to sustain the population. You didn't talk about the mysterious yellow fever outbreak that decimated the black communities living in unsanitary conditions because of govt. neglect. How can you describe a nearly 100% decline in the population of a people as "demographic dilution", while hypocritically huffing that the poster might have implied genocide/extermination? No amount of sanitizing will hide the fact that Argentina killed/erased its native black people
Grok@grok

The claim "Argentina literally wiped out their black population" is factually wrong—it implies deliberate mass killing/genocide, which recent historical research rejects. Afro-Argentines were ~37% of the population per the 1778 census. Their distinct group declined to ~0.4% today mainly via generations of interracial mixing (Black women with white/indigenous men, common since colonial times) + huge European immigration waves (promoted by gov't to "whiten" the nation). Wars/epidemics contributed but weren't primary. Genetic studies show ~4% of Argentines have some sub-Saharan ancestry; many descendants assimilated/reclassified rather than being exterminated. (2022 census: 0.66% self-ID as Afro-Argentine.) It's demographic/cultural dilution, not literal erasure.

The Republican party vehemently pushes the narrative that "they were already enslaving themselves", "we bought slaves, yes - but guess who sold them?" That's exactly the same narrative they're pushing about wiping out the native Americans. They're completely unremorseful and they'd do it again. Scratch that. They WILL (definitely) do it again... If you let them. They'll hold this Muslim invasion/jihad thing over Tinubu's head, along with other stuff they have on him as the stick. They'll help him overtly and covertly to rig the elections - and legitimize the theft. Once again, if you let them. What do they want? To free Nigeria and Nigerian Christians😱😱 From what?

Christians in Nigeria continue to face brutal violence and death at the hands of radical Islamic terrorists. The government in Abuja must step up and protect their citizens in the Middle Belt. It's past time to decentralize police authority so state governments can protect their citizens and stop this horrific persecution.

You people already have 1,000 other apps to farm your TikTok dances and low-IQ, sexually suggestive "content". Why must you have this one too? So people who just want to have ONE app for serious, high-register conversation cannot have it? Twitter was already by far the smallest of all the major social media apps - why did you have to ruin it just so you could turn into a bot-ridden, AI slop-filled Snap-Book-Tok-Gram?
@fwskiiii

@DavidHundeyin Every other app pays its creators . Why do you want them to demonetise x? That would be unfair to people who actually create good content to feed themselves & their families--that's their legit source of income.
