Let’s have a stroll down memory lane to remind you why you shouldn’t trust any big finance guy talking on here: The 2008 financial crisis was rooted in bad mortgages to people who couldn’t afford homes. Bush administration initiative. But then banks found ways to make it profitable anyway. Like having adjustable rates. You pay 2% for 3 years and then 8% later. A banker with an IQ of 115 can talk someone with an IQ of 90 into this bad deal. Then the bank packages up all the mortgages into a pool - and sells interests to the cash flows to other people. These interests are fondly known as ‘mortgage backed securities.’ (MBS). They are rated AAA because so many mortgages are in the pool that they could not all go bad - even though they could really all go bad. Then the banks built ‘collateralized debt obligations’ on top of the MBS - these have the warm name of ‘CDOs.’ They are just rights to cash flows built on top of MBS which themselves are built on top of high risk mortgages. Pyramid scheme underway! Then the banks built CDO ‘squared.’ These are CDOs built on top of other CDOs, with the same cash flow model and underlying garbage ‘assets.’ Then the banks traded these all around for years, making money with each trade. Just a huge scam where no one had any idea what the underlying assets were worth. It turned out they were worth nothing at all. And so we had the 2008-09 financial crisis where all the little people lost their homes, while the gamblers up top kept their $$ and even got bonuses. They got bailed out by the government. They never said sorry and felt no embarrassment. This is a story to keep in mind in the event we head into a new financial crisis. The Hedge Fund guys on here screeching and wailing do not have your back. They are trying to make more money than they could ever spend - and if that means workers lose a lot and shoot themselves - they do not care at all. Take anything a financier says on here with a grain of salt. Read it in the most cynical way possible. They are not your friends.
