A Humbling Witness (2012): During my first trek to Everest Base Camp, I witnessed something that broke something inside me. Porters were not allowed to stay in the same hotel as we did. The humiliation was visceral. I felt deep sadness—not pity, but outrage at an invisible line drawn between guests and the very people carrying our bags. Then came Lobuche, the second-to-last village before EBC. Because there was no shelter for them, the porters had to walk back down to Pheriche after a full day's work, then return early the next morning to carry loads to Gorakshep. They walked double the distance just for the right to sleep. That image never left me. Recent Progress, But Not Enough: Through my initiative, the @nimsdai foundation has built a Porter House in Lobuche, spending over $500,000. It will open in May - for those who build the dreams of many climbers. But let me be clear: it is not enough. One house does not undo decades of neglect. Current Wages & Loads: Daily wages range from NPR 1,500 to 2100 , but porters pay for their own food (NPR 600–1000), leaving a net income of as little as NPR 300–600 for a 8- to 10-hour day. Loads of 40–60 kg remain common—far above the ethical guideline of 30 kg—causing chronic back problems, joint degeneration, and permanent spinal injuries. Deaths and Health Risks: The International Porter Protection Group estimates 50–100 porters die annually in Nepal from cold, altitude sickness, and accidents. Almost entirely preventable deaths. The Solution · Enforce a minimum daily wage of NPR 2,400 with food, accommodation, and insurance provided separately. · Implement strict 30 kg weight limits with regular checkpoints and penalties for violations. · Mandate adequate porter shelters at all major trekking stops with proper heating and sanitation. · Require comprehensive insurance for every porter, including helicopter evacuation and death benefits. The Bottom Line: Porters are not beasts of burden. They are human beings who risk their lives so others can stand on the world's highest peaks. In 2012, I felt helpless watching them walk back into the dark toward Pheriche. Today, I am no longer helpless and neither should Nepal be.
