Beste @Politie , Het is weer eens hetzelfde patroon: er verschijnt een filmpje of post van de politie en toevallig gaat het wéér over moslims. Dan volgt er (terechte) ophef en vrijwel automatisch de geruststellende uitleg dat christenen ook bidden, bijvoorbeeld voor het eten, dus zie je wel, niets aan de hand, iedereen gelijk, alles neutraal. Maar beste politie, niemand gelooft dat nog echt. We zien agenten openlijk op iftars verschijnen, in uniform. We zien de politie aanwezig zijn op beurzen zoals laatst in Utrecht, naast figuren die bekendstaan als haatpredikers. Tegelijkertijd kennen we allemaal de verhalen over Joodse instellingen die moeite hebben om structurele beveiliging te krijgen, of over agenten die liever niet worden ingezet bij Joodse objecten. En dan wordt er verbaasd gereageerd wanneer burgers aangeven dat hun vertrouwen in de politie afbrokkelt. Dit gaat niet over een individueel gebed tijdens een pauze. Dat is een handige versmalling van het gesprek. Dit gaat over het feit dat één religie in de praktijk een uitzonderingspositie heeft gekregen, cultureel, institutioneel en politiek. Niemand ziet agenten collectief het Onze Vader bidden op de werkvloer. Niemand ziet politiecampagnes die christelijke rituelen normaliseren of expliciet onder de aandacht brengen. Niemand ziet agenten in uniform poseren bij kerkelijke feestdagen om “verbinding” uit te stralen. Die zichtbaarheid werkt vrijwel uitsluitend één kant op. En wat pas echt gekmakend is: zodra je dat benoemt, volgt het gaslighten. Zo respectloos. Alsof je gek bent. Alsof je het verkeerd ziet. Alsof kritiek gelijkstaat aan intolerantie. Alsof iedereen niet met eigen ogen kan zien wat er gebeurt. De politie hoort neutraal te zijn. Niet alleen in beleid en verklaringen, maar ook in uitstraling, keuzes en symboliek. Zeker in een land waar de scheiding tussen religie en staat (nog steeds!) een kernwaarde is. Zeker voor een instituut dat volledig leunt op maatschappelijk vertrouwen. Wanneer burgers het gevoel krijgen dat ideologie langzaam is binnengedrongen in onze instituties, ontstaat er een probleem dat je niet oplost met gladde tweets waarmee je eigenlijk zegt dat je andermans intelligentie onderschat. Dit soort posts nemen die zorgen niet weg, ze bevestigen ze. En dan straks verbaasd reageren als mensen je niet meer serieus nemen. Daar helpt geen knieval op je matje aan.

Billions in aid and investment were promised. It could have been the beginning of a Palestinian Singapore. But instead of building schools, hospitals, and industries, we built tunnels, rockets, and militias. Instead of creating hope, we chose hatred. Instead of turning Gaza into proof that Palestinians can govern themselves, we turned it into proof that we cannot. When Israel left, the world expected calm, peace, and progress. What did we give them? Civil war between Fatah and Hamas. Executions in the streets. A terror group seizing power and turning Gaza into a launching pad for endless wars. And the world still asks: Why doesn’t Israel “just give up the West Bank” too? Because they already saw what happened the last time they gave land for nothing in return. The truth is painful, but it must be said: We were given a chance to build a future and we used it to destroy our own. We could have shown that we were ready for peace. Instead, we showed that we were ruled by those who fear peace more than they fear death. Every rocket fired from Gaza wasn’t just aimed at Israel - it was aimed at our own future. And now, after all the destruction, poverty, and death, I keep asking myself: What if, just once, we had chosen life instead of revenge? We had the opportunity to end the conflict. But our leaders and too many of us chose to keep it alive.
