BAD NEWS FOR RISK-ASSETS 🇺🇸 The US government’s main account (called the Treasury General Account or TGA) is nearing $1 trillion. This is the highest amount in almost 5 years. In the past month alone, it increased by ~$300 billion. Here’s why this matters👇 When the government adds money to this account, it pulls cash out of the financial system. That means less money available for banks, lending, and investing. Why that can be bad: 1. Less liquidity Banks have less cash available, which can create stress in short-term funding markets (like SOFR). 2. Higher interest rates To build up this cash, the government often issues more short-term debt (T-bills), which can push bond yields higher. 3. Pressure on markets Higher rates and lower liquidity tend to hurt riskier assets, especially crypto. What this could mean: When liquidity drops, crypto is often hit first. This doesn’t guarantee a drop, but overall, conditions may be tilted to the downside for now. What do you think?
