While we’re all waiting painfully for the English version of this novel, I want to share why I LOVE this novel and why I keep rereading it. I’ve said this in Thai before, but I really want international fans to get this too. This is the first Thai GL story I’ve ever read that uses the term “wife/wife” without forcing one character into a stereotypical “top” or “bottom” gendered role. For international fans, this might sound like a small thing— but in Thai, the words characters use for each other carry huge cultural meaning. In many Thai GL/BL stories, writers usually try to define roles in a couple, even if they’re both women. One character is written more “masculine” and gets called like the “husband,” and the other is treated as the “wife,” even though both are women. That’s why THIS novel is different. The author uses: “เมีย” (wife), used to refer to one’s spouse in informal speech. = both characters calling each other “wife,” equally, no one is positioned above the other. “ภรรยา” = the formal word for “wife,” used seriously, not as a joke, not as a gendered punchline. This is significant to me because the Thai language is structured in a way that reinforces gender expectations, which makes this kind of representation rare. It’s a quiet but powerful statement of normalization. No forced dominance/submission roles. The story rejects the mindset that queer couples must copy straight dynamics. No one has to “replace” a man for the relationship to be valid. No “top must be masculine, bottom must be feminine” framing. Just two women in love, calling each other their wife. #LingOrm #หลิงออม
