A recent study titled “Discovery and Characterization of Anti-Tumor Gut Microbiota from Amphibians and Reptiles” is raising eyebrows after researchers identified a bacterium called Ewingella americana with striking anti-tumor effects in mice. According to the study, the bacteria worked through a dual mechanism: directly killing tumor cells while also activating the body’s immune defenses, including T cells, neutrophils, and B cells. The results were remarkable. Mice treated with the bacteria eliminated their tumors. When researchers reintroduced the cancer, the previously treated mice rejected it completely, showing durable anti-tumor immunity and 100% survival in the treated group. It’s early research and still limited to animal models, but findings like this are fueling growing interest in how the microbiome may shape the future of cancer treatment.
