That's the problem with a ton of legacy media, even beyond SW, writers became obsessed with the idea of artifically making beloved heroes into weak broken cowards just so they can get that "ending". They don't realize it's transparently bad writing and horribly unsatisfying.

Whenever I talk to friends who don’t like THE LAST JEDI the consensus is that it ruined Luke Skywalker as a character, but Luke achieving a level of Buddhist peace feels like the most satisfying ending I can imagine for the character.
