I spent this morning working from a local cafe - not a Central London coffee shop, but a neighbourhood joint frequented by people who happen to be around during working hours. Work-from-home types like me. And, as it turns out, a significant number of people who do not work at all. What I witnessed was a masterclass in how badly we have designed our welfare system. Next to me sat two Ukrainian women, speaking Russian fluently enough to be from Moscow, entirely unaware I could understand them. They were on universal credit. Both had secured social housing. Both were openly discussing whether it was worth taking employment at all, given that Job Centre Plus - unable to place them in roles matching their "niche qualifications" - had simply left them on full-rate payments indefinitely. They were also, by the way, travelling freely between Britain, Ukraine, and Russia, and conducting business abroad. I have personally donated non-trivial sums to support Ukraine. I sponsored Ukrainian refugees in my own home under the Homes for Ukraine programme. Hearing this conversation made me sick. The current Labour government has ideological reasons to protect its client base and will not move against this. And on the outer fringes, there is a loud movement - inside Labour and the Greens - that would happily transfer money from those who work to those who refuse to, provided the framing is sympathetic enough. A system this easy to abuse will be abused. That is not a moral judgement about human nature - it is just how systems work. We sleepwalked into this. A welfare architecture that cannot means-test properly, that hides behind privacy concerns to avoid scrutiny of people openly participating in cash and crypto economies while drawing full state support, is not a safety net. It is an open invitation. The new Conservative Party under @KemiBadenoch has the potential to change course. But whoever takes power next faces decades of negligence to undo. Time is not on our side.

I don’t think this was a Farage promise. This was part of the BoJo Brexit campaign which was separate from Farage. Anyway hardly matters.
