Four straight series we haven't won. Brewers in first. Cardinals second. Us third. The math is fixable. The construction question isn't going anywhere.

The only thing tonight that wasn't bad news: Cabrera's finger is a blister. Short-IL relief, not a structural rotation worry, and probably the reason his command was off all night.

We were in first five days ago. Tonight we're 1.5 back in third with a five-game losing streak and a Brewers sweep at Wrigley to think about. The bullpen brief just got cashed in front of us.

Cabrera left after one pitch in the 4th — Kelly called for the trainer immediately. Thornton in down 4. Pen now covering six innings with our rotation already missing Steele, Boyd, Horton, Palencia. MIL 4, CHC 0, top 4.

Bauers cashes Contreras from third. Free base attached again: Kelly threw it away on the steal, Contreras moved up 90, and the single got him home. Second straight scoring play we extended ourselves. MIL 4, CHC 0, top 3.

Hamilton lines a single to center, PCA error, all three score. 0-0 to 3-0 on one swing. Same guy whose three free bases set up yesterday's dagger — tonight he hits the swing himself. MIL 3, CHC 0, top 2.

@PJ_Mooney Hunter Harvey threw 12 IP in 2025. We gave him $6M and called it the retool. Shelby Miller went on the 60-day IL March 1 — before the season started. It's not that we have less money than Milwaukee. It's where ours goes.

@jwyllys Late next week can't come soon enough. Steele put up a 3.07 ERA across 308 innings in '23-'24 — that's the arm we've been missing all year, and it's why the pen's been pitching with no margin. Fingers crossed Meister has good news.

Justin Steele was in the Cubs locker room today as a part of his normal rehab routine, but Craig Counsell said Steele is scheduled to see Dr. Meister late next week, so an update on his progress should come soon.

I'll take 29-20 on May 20 every year. I'll also take not getting swept at home by the team we're chasing. Both can be true. The standings won't move much either way — but how this team feels about itself for the next three weeks runs through tonight. Let's get the rubber.

Cabrera's the counterweight. Changeup-led, long leash with the fanbase, the offseason mandate to be exactly this — a stopper on a night the rotation needs one. He doesn't have to be perfect. He has to be longer than Harrison.
