@QuentinDempster Hydro definitely, the rest are all intermittent and / or require strip mining the planet, and rely on foreign supply chains. This is obvious to anyone credible. We have centuries of energy here and we have a self inflicted energy shortage and detonating prices.

Rupert/Lachlan Murdoch’s megaphones in Australia now push shale oil fracking re global crisis. No mention of what The Economist calls the game changer: solar/wind/battery/hydro renewables. This is the market-driven transition we need. Drill-baby-drill is discredited Trumpism.
The Australian@australian

In just two decades, Australia has gone from energy self-sufficiency to dangerous dependence. Like the US, we can turn it around. The question is, will we? Read more: bit.ly/4sapHOi

@Mel32536634151 @taipan168 Genuine, legitimate, actual skill and labour shortages (which we’re currently only filling in part) and age demographics time bomb that we can only fix with major local baby boom or - possibly - robots.

This is a good article. Without migrants, Australia stops. Sure, the migration program needs an overhaul to ensure that we target people with the skills we need and that people whose visas have expired leave, but “net zero” migration is a fantasy. theaustralian.com.au/commentary/wer…

@Mel32536634151 @taipan168 I think the price of zero is too high, it’s true. But cut below 100,000 and likely under 75,000 dispersed correctly is very manageable. Anything above that is intentionally choosing increased homelessness and lower family formations for Australian citizens.

@CunningInsights @taipan168 Why not zero for the time being? Just until our housing and infrastructure can cope with the influx we already have?

If that was true why is the average migrant old than the Australian average, productivity is the lowest in 50 years. The economy is the opposite of dynamic relying on fossil fuel industry and fake international students who’s only goal is to get PR and rents for the young people has risen 2-3x that of wages since Covid. I’d argue record migration is the cause of those issues that just juices gdp numbers but per capita we’ve basically been in reccesion since 2019 and it’s just been hidden by rapid population growth. Why would businesses improve their business if you have an ever increasing amount of people to sell too?

@Maroye @StewartMac73395 @simon_ree I’m not sure people quite understand the strip mining required to make this sort of thing happen. The sheer tonnage of earth needed to be turned, and chemicals dumped into the ground, and human misery, is devastating. Nuclear is the obvious answer when total cost is considered.

Australia was handed one of the greatest starting positions of any country in history Massive mineral wealth. Abundant energy. World-class beaches. Amazing climate. No fault lines... no earthquakes or tsunamis If you gave a 12-year-old this setup in a civilisation-building game, they'd build a paradise Instead, we got decades of useless politicians on both sides of the aisle who couldn't run a sausage sizzle at Bunnings without a $4 billion feasibility study and a royal commission Australia isn't unlucky. It's grossly mismanaged

Empty platitudes aside, the 3 points requested are sensible: 1. Short term plan to ensure fuel gets to where it’s most needed 2. Long term plan that capitalises on our natural resources for energy sovereignty 3. Upcoming budget to contain structural reform for future prosperity The problem? He doesn’t have credibility on energy security given he was Energy Minister from 2018-22. Nor budget reform given he was Shadow Treasurer with the worst policies in decades taken to the 2025 election.
Angus Taylor MP@AngusTaylorMP

The government has had five weeks to act on the fuel crisis. Australians deserve clarity and leadership - they've received neither. Watch here my response to the Prime Minister. 👇
