Instead of playing formal games of volleyball, we use Newcomb ball. The rules are similar, but only throwing and catching skills are required. Ss still develop court awareness, understand how to rotate and comprehend the 3 touch rule. Engagement is 👆

@RTBIntramurals @opheacanada Hey Steve, Wondering how to meet the interest of grade 4-8 students. Is it fair to say once every 2 weeks you get a chance to attend open gym? Otherwise I’m opening the gym everyday and worry about stretching myself too thin

What do your PE class warmups look like? I create a new one each week, using a wide variety of movements to challenge students physical literacy. I also keep it short (3-4 mins). This week is: - 1 lap of skipping - 10 squats - 5 180 degree jump and turns @HPE_TDSB @opheacanada

@PHECanada What I always want is more support to schedule pe into all class timetables. How do we highlight the importance of PE and bring it into the same conversations we are having about math and literacy? Despite living in a health pandemic pe continues to be on the back burner.

PE teachers, I’m planning to post images and key points of performance of functional movements in the gym. To avoid overloading the walls and students minds, I’d like to pick 7 - 8. Which are most crucial to long term healthy active living? @opheacanada @HPE_TDSB

To the PE community…functional movements are found in everyday life. Squatting to sit on the toilet, deadlifting to pick an object off the ground, performing a push up after you fall down. How are you consistently incorporating these into your programs? @HPE_TDSB @opheacanada

@HPE_TDSB @PHECanada @opheacanada @OPENPhysEd It all begins with explicit teaching in relation to movement skills. This is what we do in math, language, science etc. We need to extend this to the gym. There needs to be an emphasis on teaching functional movements as well. We can’t simply accept playing as good enough.
