My new book Climate Uncertainty and Risk has arrived! Early reviews: “Judith A. Curry leverages her background in climate science, weather forecasting, and devising risk management strategies to present the climate policy debate we have never had. Her balanced, evidence-based, and multifaceted discussion leaves the reader ‘better informed as to the uncertainties and the various values in play’ in designing climate policy.”―Peter Hartley “Judith A. Curry is one of the world’s leading scholars of climate change and a deep thinker about how science copes with uncertainty. In this refreshing and comprehensive book, she shows with meticulous care and great clarity that exaggerated claims about climate change made for political purposes are wide of the mark. Instead, she shows the way to a rational and practical discussion of this polarized topic.”―Matt Ridley “With climate models running too hot by a factor of 2 for 30 years, with everything that used to be called a weather event now a portent of climate change, and with billions being invested against this as opposed to other more pressing world needs, Judith A. Curry provides us with a much-needed and convincing rethink.”―Michael Kelly amazon.com/s?k=judith+cur…

🧵 1/11 Imagine a world where it rained...for two million years straight. Not a drizzle, but biblical downpours that reshaped the planet, wiped out half the species, and set the stage for dinosaurs to rule. This isn't sci-fi, it's the Carnian Pluvial Event (CPE), Earth's wildest weather tantrum that took place 232 million years ago. Grab your rain gear because we are diving in!

Nicola Scafetta has published an excellent new book that is a very important contribution towards grasping the true complexity of Earth's climate. He describes the book in a post at Climate Etc. judithcurry.com/2026/03/10/ret…

COLUMN: Net zero by 2050 is effectively dead: Oil, natural gas and coal will remain crucial for meeting the world's energy needs. But that doesn't mean the end of renewable energy. Solar, in particular, is thriving, and will continue to boom. @Opinion bloomberg.com/opinion/articl…

There have been some news items about the US DoE Report I coauthored, the EF rescission and the FACA lawsuit, which have created a few misconceptions. Here's an update on the project. judithcurry.com/2026/02/21/cle…

What a counterintuitive twist in the climate story. The Sahara Desert of all places has shrunk by about 8% since the 1980s thanks to rising CO₂ levels fueling a remarkable global green renaissance. Data from NASA’s AVHRR and MODIS instruments show that 25% to 50% of Earth's vegetated lands have become significantly greener, an area equivalent to roughly twice the continental United States. CO₂ fertilization drove around 70% of this boom, making plants more efficient with water by reducing the time stomata (leaf pores) stay open, which in turn cuts water loss and boosts drought resistance. This has allowed vegetation to reclaim arid edges in places like the Sahel (the Sahara's southern fringe), the Middle East and Australia's outback. The Sahara alone had lost around 8% of its desert, equivalent to over 700,000 km² of added green cover and pushing back the barren sand wastes in formerly inhospitable zones. Atmospheric CO₂ now hovers around 430 ppm (early 2026 levels) enabling plants to thrive where they once couldn't. While climate change brings serious challenges, this greening shows a clear, measurable benefit from higher CO₂: and a greener, more resilient planet in many dry regions.

@hausfath No, the "danger" from warming is a CO2 thing; danger from flooding etc. is a water thing

@curryja But anthropogenic water vapor emissions in isolation would have a negligible effect on GMST due to precipitation. It doesn’t accumulate, unlike GHGs.

Zeke, CO2 is also a feedback in the climate system. Once you disappear the artificial distinction between the physical processes included in climate models & those that aren't (forcing vs feedback), water vapor is arguably more dangerous than CO2 (ultimate cause of floods, etc).
Zeke Hausfather@hausfath

@atrembath @RogerPielkeJr That’s nonsense, as water vapor is a feedback in the climate system rather than a forcing (with the exception of stratospheric water vapor from CH4 oxidation, which is generally accounted for as part of CH4 indirect forcing).

A newly released, peer-reviewed German study published in Communications Earth & Environment finds that offshore wind turbines can significantly alter ocean wind and water conditions. The study reports that currents may slow by as much as 20%, with potentially serious implications for commercial fishing, shipping, disaster response, search and rescue operations, and national defense. This research should be a wake up call to policymakers: we must not allow climate crusaders to play God with the environment. See link below. The EPA ruling is available. The EPA is declining to issue a finding on the science. The rescission is based strictly on the legal argument that the EPA never had authority to regulate GHGs and the recent SCOTUS rulings forbid the EPA staff from improvising rulemaking authorities that properly belong to Congress. "We received comments in support of this alternative basis, including from commenters asserting that the EPA compiled and analyzed the scientific record unreasonably in 2009 by severing the analysis of endangerment and contribution and issuing findings separately from emission standards and from commenters asserting that the scientific record did not then, or does not now, provide the certainty necessary to make such findings. We also received comments in opposition to this alternative basis, including from commenters asserting that the scientific record supporting the findings is “overwhelming” and has been strengthened in the intervening years. Although the Administrator continues to harbor concerns regarding many of the scientific inputs and analyses underlying the Endangerment Finding, we are not finalizing this alternative given our conclusion that the EPA lacks statutory authority to regulate in response to global climate change concerns under CAA section 202(a)(1). The legal interpretation finalized in this action means that we cannot resolve remaining scientific controversies in this regulatory context and renders it unnecessary and inappropriate to invoke the Administrator’s authority to exercise judgment on these questions under that provision.." In other words, they lack regulatory authority over climate-related emissions, and they likewise lack regulatory authority to resolve scientific questions concerning climate change. epa.gov/regulations-em…

My quote in the Politico article: “Politicized science & a manufactured consensus on complex and deeply uncertain science will invariably mislead policy makers & lead to poor policy making. Establishment climate change science and its promotion by activist climate scientists in an effort to eliminate the use of fossil fuels is a case in point.” politico.com/news/2026/02/1…

In roughly 150 years, the United States drained over half of the wetlands that once covered the continent. Those wetlands slowed floods, stored seasonal water, filtered rivers, and supported massive bird and fish nurseries. When they disappeared, rivers ran faster, flood peaks rose, drought swings sharpened, and migration systems fractured. Since then, billions have been spent on levees, pumps, dams, and flood-control projects… trying to replace stability systems that had already existed. One of the largest natural water-management networks in North America wasn’t built. It was removed.

Michael Mann said the endangerment finding “been the primary tool that we have had to actually regulate carbon emissions and meet our obligations under various global agreements to address the climate crisis.” This is a frankly stupid thing to say.
Alex Trembath@atrembath

I wrote about this when EPA announced the rescission. Both the endangerment finding's opponents and proponents overstate its importance. thebreakthrough.org/issues/energy/…
