I was terrible at social dance for years bc I thought it was about *making the right moves.* But it's really about making *any movement* as long as it's in response to the music & ur partner

Lotta fellow nerds suck at charisma because they think it's about *saying the right things.* It isn't. It's about rapport. It's about being a good reply-guy IRL. Your words can be nonsense as long as you're participating in a back-and-forth patter

@ilex_ulmus Also seems possible that it's just a straight-up power shift. The AI CEOs etc just have mother-fuck of power right now and it seems like the "build AI fast" team is just winning? Like, by a lot? So now there is bound to be fawning going on due to the status shift...

I think this is why the old AI Safety world wants to badly to be friends with the AI cos and excuse their behavior (“The Incentives”). They relate to the ambition (frankly, to the corruptibility) and they try to offer acceptance ("charity") to secure acceptance.

My advice for anyone who is alarmed to see a community considering harsh boundaries on someone is to check your anxiety and see if it is about yourself, your own fear of rejection/not belonging.

@ilex_ulmus Interesting. So basically you feel like old AI safety crew relates to the people building AI unsafely because they feel similar ("they're ambitious, like me!") so they're offering acceptance so they don't feel like they themselves are bad?
