I used to think it was solely incompetence too.
So I decided to look into how telecom works in Nigeria and found something interesting.
A lot of the problems aren’t simply “Airtel or MTN are bad.” The system they operate in is brutally unfavorable
• Cities have too many users connected to too few cell phone towers so, the congestion kills speed. This is exactly why MTN, Airtel and other WiFi connections feel much faster at night when fewer people are online.
• Fibre cables get cut constantly, sometimes by construction work, trailers, road expansion, or accidental damage. One cut can affect a whole area.
• Many towers run on generators because power is of course not as constant here and that affects uptime and costs.
• Equipment theft and vandalism are real operational problems that damage infrastructure and cause outages.
• And lastly, expanding infrastructure is expensive, and a lot of equipment, software, and upgrades are paid for in dollars, not naira. That makes scaling and maintenance even harder.
That doesn’t make bad service okay, but it explains why things feel this way. We’re running on hard mode in the telecom industry.
I’ve never seen South Africans complain about MTN in their country and I’ve never seen these telecom companies fireback when they get blamed for the parts they just couldn’t help
