People have zero clue the hours a high school coach puts in away from their family. This past weekend looked like this: Saturday: Emails and work in the morning, morning practice, grocery shopping, attending an event for one of my athletes, then home to assemble a wheelbarrow, set up the BP zone, and test the ANCORE unit (which I bought with my own money). Sunday: Emails to parents, players, and administration. One lesson. Then 11 AM – 6 PM on the field preparing it for our first outdoor practice. Got home, made dinner (skipped lunch), then finished Blast assignments, player equipment assignments, and practice planning. I don’t do this for the money. None of us do. Sometimes I just wish people understood the sacrifice and the hours coaches put in trying to do the best they can with what they have. My Whoop band has the evidence of the lack of sleep this past week. At times it’s a thankless job but it’s always about the kids. Just some advice to parents when it comes to their HS coaches, stop and think about the amount of time it takes for a part-time job. I still have to prepare for my special education students each week and make sure they get the same treatment. We do it out of the love and not for the money. My net financial gain the past three years financially has been zero. Rapsodo memberships, Rapsodo units, paying for athlete testing devices, and other training devices just to help us compete have come from my own pocket. Why do I do it? Because building something is more important than the financial gain.
